Not such a smooth entry, because I had no wifi /data so couldn't show my ticket.... very helpful women on the gate sorted it out. I'd also downloaded the audioguide which again didn't work for me until they helped .... But my oh my, it really was BREATHTAKING, totally awesome!!! (I found the audioguide a little distracting, so wanted to walk around without it, but once I'd reached the end of the circuit, it was hard to go against the flow and start again) Feb visit - still quite busy! An amazing place, incredible atmosphere, I'm in awe of the brick/tile vaulting. Medusa heads are superb. Modern art installations are a nice touch. Later, I watched videos from the film 'Inferno' - which incldes a copy of the cistern for their set!

Booking skip-the-line tickets was the best decision. We arrived and entered quickly, avoiding a huge line outside. The Basilica Cistern totally exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere is almost cinematic: lights reflecting on the water, rows of ancient columns, and a mysterious atmosphere that makes you imagine the nearly 1,500-year history of that place. The Medusa heads are a fascinating and unique detail. It was undoubtedly one of the most memorable experiences of my trip to Istanbul. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Entry was okay, a little delayed as I had booked 5 tickets which all had to be located on my phone with PDF individually. This may be something to consider streamlining to reduce queues. I booked the audio tour which was a bit of a hassle to get on to 5 phones. The staff member was excellent and very patient with us, so a big thumbs up. The Basilica was awesome and we all thoroughly enjoyed our visit and took time to walk around at our own pace. I would consider it quite expensive particularly if added to the other paid for attractions in Istanbul.

The ease of purchasing tickets online, the faster admission process, and the audio guide on my cell phone, to start with. The girls at the entrance are really wonderful, they are very helpful. Upon entering, the lighting of the cistern makes the work stand out. The path marked above the water allows you to admire the entire structure. Although there were many people, you could look around and stop freely. It is a very interesting experience to also understand a little history and stop to admire the architecture.

Amazing atmosphere: The place is dark with lots of tall columns, and the water reflects the lights, which feels magical. Old history: It was built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian I to store water for the city. Medusa heads: There are two stone Medusa heads used as column bases. They are famous and very interesting to see. Reflections and sounds: The water and the high ceiling make beautiful reflections and echoing sounds, which makes it feel unique.

It makes it so messier to purchase tickets online so when you arrive at the venue you are ready to enter. Booking is simple and easy . The Basilica Cistern was so impressive, there is a magical feel to the place and ands incredibly beautiful. A friend of mine from Istanbul told me that years ago you could rent boats and paddle through there. I love the picture my mind sees of that

Well, what makes it special is the historic setting, which is quite well-preserved. The downside... there are way too many people, and it’s very noisy, which makes it hard to enjoy the magnificent surroundings—a place that really invites you to unwind. As for the price, to be honest, I think it’s a bit steep: 39 euros for a visit that lasts about 30 minutes.

March is generally a slow season, so there wasn't much of a line at the entrance, but with our "skip-the-line" tickets, we got in right away—we just went through security and showed the QR code on our ticket. Highly recommended!!!

I loved it—the cistern has everything you need for a great time. The scenery is beautiful, and the Romans prove once again that they were the best architects. Admission is expensive, like it is for all monuments.
  • Skip the lines and explore the Basilica Cistern with expert-led tours or audio guides.

    Getting started

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled time and keep your mobile ticket and a valid photo ID ready. A staff member will meet you at the entrance and help you check in. You’ll breeze past the ticket queue, but do note that all visitors must go through a security check.

    Basilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern is one of Istanbul’s most atmospheric spots—a vast, ancient underground reservoir built in the 6th century. It’s best known for its forest of marble columns, the serene reflections in the water, and, of course, the mysterious Medusa heads hidden at the far end.

Depending on the ticket you choose, an expert guide will accompany you through the cistern. You’ll get the backstory behind the Medusa heads, learn how this shadowy space once supplied water to emperors, and hear quirky details you’d probably miss on your own.

Prefer to explore at your own pace? You can use the included audio app, available in five languages, to guide you through the cistern. If you want to see more of Istanbul, upgrade your ticket to include a guided tour of Hagia Sophia, an architectural masterpiece known for its massive dome and golden mosaics.

  • What to bring

    • Wear comfortable shoes with a good grip—the stone floor can be damp and slightly slippery.

    • Bring a light jacket or shawl; it stays cool underground even in warm weather.

    • Carry wired headphones if you plan to use an audio guide app—Bluetooth often struggles underground.

    • Have your phone fully charged for photos and the audio guide (there are no charging stations inside).

    What's not allowed

    • Flash photography is not permitted.

    • Tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed due to space and safety concerns.

    • Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly prohibited inside the cistern.

    Accessibility

    • The site is partially accessible; there is a lift near the exit on Alemdar Street near the tram line, but the walking path inside may be uneven in places.

    • Wheelchair users may need assistance, especially around corners or where the lighting is low.

    • There are no elevators inside the cistern, and seating is extremely limited.

    Additional information

    • Your ticket allows you to skip the ticket queue, but all visitors must go through a security check.

    • Arrive early in the morning or visit in the evening to avoid crowds from cruise ship tours.

    • Don’t miss the Medusa heads tucked into the far corner. Walk around them to see both angles.

    • The exit leads out to a different street than the entrance; take note of your location before entering.

    • The lighting is intentionally dim—give your eyes a moment to adjust for better visibility and photos

    • Your voucher will be emailed to you shortly.
    • Display the voucher on your mobile phone with a valid photo ID at the starting point.
