Did you know?

The Basilica Cistern is named after the large public square called Stoa Basilica, which was located above it at the surface level.

According to historical accounts, it is believed that about 7,000 slaves worked on the construction of the Basilica Cistern.

The Basilica Cistern has withstood around 22 major earthquakes since it was constructed, proof of the exceptional skills of its Byzantine builders.

Many of the 336 marble columns supporting the cistern were salvaged and repurposed from even older Greek and Roman temples and ruins.

The presence of the Basilica Cistern and other connected water cisterns allowed Constantinople to remain unconquered by enemy sieges for around 1,000 years.

Why visit Basilica Cistern?

1,500 years of history

The Basilica Cistern was constructed in 532 AD. This ancient water reservoir played a pivotal role during the Byzantine period, serving as a major water storage facility. Istanbul has borne witness to the rise and fall of two mighty empires, having served as the capital of both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

Architectural marvel

With its vast underground chambers supported by 336 marble columns and a capacity to hold 80,000 cubic metres of water, the Basilica Cistern showcases the ingenuity of Byzantine architects, engineers, and craftsmen. The reuse of even older columns and capitals adds to its architectural uniqueness.

Mysterious ambiance

The dimly lit interior of the Basilica Cistern, combined with the still water and the sound of dripping water, creates a mystical atmosphere that transports visitors back in time. This amplifies its centuries-long presence and offers a truly unique experience.

Filming location

The Basilica Cistern's eerie ambience has also made it a popular filming location for movies and TV shows, including the 1963 Bond film "From Russia with Love" and the 2016 movie "Inferno".

An experience I would repeat without hesitation. Feeling the breeze as you take off in the hot-air balloon during the gorgeous Cappadocia sunrise, with hundreds of balloons lifting off almost in unison as the first rays of sunlight appear and reveal this lovely city's beautiful landscape, is truly unforgettable. Thanks to Osman and the whole team. Regards.

We visited the Basilica Cistern on September 26, 2026. It was wonderful to have the flexibility to choose our visiting time after 9:00 AM. The waiting queue was extremely long, but we managed to exchange our online reservation for paper entrance tickets through a guide standing nearby. While it was a little tricky to spot the guide at first, it was totally worth it—we got to skip the massive line and head right inside. The Basilica Cistern is truly a must-visit when you are in Istanbul!

The evening before the agreed date, I had to send an email because the tickets hadn't arrived yet. In the end, it was sorted out. We were at the Hagia Sophia at 9:00 AM. There were still very few visitors at that hour. Unfortunately, the ongoing renovation work somewhat obstructed a good view of the building. At the Basilica Cistern, we easily found the man with the little flag to get inside. It was incredibly crowded here. As for the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet), there was no queue. We went in very smoothly. We didn't need an audio guide because we had done the necessary research beforehand.

After the purchase, I received an email with detailed instructions in Spanish about where they were waiting for us at a specific point. They helped us with the QR code to download the entire history of the tower. The 360-degree views of the entire city are beautiful. I had read that it was not necessary to visit, but for me, it was 100% worth it. It was a great farewell to Istanbul.
