Getting started

If you have round-trip transfers included, you are picked up from your confirmed location and driven to the Barron River rafting base. Self-driving guests head directly to the designated start point at Lake Placid, car park at 101 Lake Placid Road. On arrival, you check in, meet your professional river guide, and receive your initial rafting briefing before gearing up.

This half-day rafting session gives you around 2 hours of rafting on the Barron River near Cairns, with guidance tailored for first-timers and returning rafters. The focus is on learning core rafting skills, working with your crew, and navigating the river under controlled conditions.

Features

Time on the water is approximately 2 hours rafting on the Barron River, so you get an extended run to practice paddling, responding to instructions, and moving through varied river sections.

A professional river guide leads your raft, providing rafting training that covers basic techniques, how to paddle as a team, and how to respond to commands throughout the trip.

All rafting equipment and all safety gear, including helmets and life jackets, are provided, so you do not need to bring specialized gear for the activity.

Basic instructions in Mandarin and Japanese are available on request, which supports guests who are more comfortable receiving key safety and rafting information in these languages.

Changing rooms after rafting are available so you can get out of your wet gear and into dry clothes before you leave the site.

Round-trip transfers, as per the option selected, are included if you choose the Half-Day Rafting Session + Transfers variant, or you can opt for the Half-Day Rafting Session without transfers if you prefer to self-drive.

What to bring

Footwear: Wear footwear with a heel strap; you can hire suitable shoes on-site if needed.

Clothing: Wear swimwear or quick-dry clothing as you will get wet while rafting.

Warm layers: Bring or hire thermal tops or dry tops if you feel the cold.

Valuables: Leave jewellery and other valuables at your accommodation before the tour.

Spending money: Bring some money if you plan to hire shoes, thermal tops, dry tops, or buy photos and refreshments.

Accessibility

Wheelchairs: The tour is partially accessible; only foldable wheelchairs can be accommodated, and some stairs are involved.

Physical ability: You need sufficient upper body strength to hold ropes and move in the raft.

Vision and hearing: You must see hazards and ropes clearly and hear and follow the guide's instructions.

What’s not allowed

Intoxication: You will not be able to participate if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Additional information

Age requirement: The minimum age is 12 years, and anyone under 18 must travel with a responsible adult.

Pregnancy: This experience is not suitable if you are pregnant.

Experience level: You do not need prior rafting experience to join this tour.

Fitness level: A low-moderate level of overall fitness is required for this activity.
