To start with, follow your expert guide and hop on a luxury bus to tour the legendary Syntagma Square. This square has been the very heart of Athens ever since the city became the capital of the modern Greek state. Along the way, see the National Garden as well as the Parliament, in front of which lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that honors all those Greek soldiers who were ever killed in the war. You will also see Schliemann’s House and the triumphal Arch of Hadrian, and pass by two major churches. St. Paul’s, the earliest foreign church in the Greek capital, and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Dionysius, the main Roman Catholic church of Athens.
Drive past the Athens Trilogy including the University of Athens, the Academy of Athens, and the National Library. Your guide will tell you more about Athens’s history, both old and new, as you gaze out at these stately buildings. Make a quick photo stop at the Panathinaiko Stadium, where the first Olympic Games took place in 1896. It is the only stadium built out of white marble. Continue onwards and see the Zappeion and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
At the archaeological site of the Acropolis, save time and skip the lines. Enter the Propylaea, the monumental gateway that blends Doric and Ionic building principles and pay a visit to the small temple of Athena Nike that protects the gate to the citadel. See also the Parthenon, and Erechtheion with its Porch of Maidens.
