This was an amazing tour! João was fantastic—extremely welcoming, personable, and friendly. He was also incredibly knowledgeable about the monastery and shared so much interesting history throughout the tour. The tour itself was outstanding, and I highly recommend it. The monastery is absolutely stunning, and there is so much to learn. Even a week later, I’m still thinking about what a wonderful experience it was. The visit to Pastéis de Belém was an added bonus and a perfect opportunity to try the famous pastry. We also loved the final stop at the Monument to the Discoveries. There was so much to take in, and ending the tour by the water was a beautiful touch. There are also several charming restaurants nearby if you want to stay and enjoy the area. This is a must-book tour if you’re in Lisbon—our trip would not have been the same without it!

Our guide (forgot his name) was wonderful. Sipping the line was key (BTW if you take Uber make sure yhey drop you in front of the Maritime Museum, not the Monastery). The Monastery Cloister is stunningly beautiful. Our guide gave us good info about the history and the Monk's daily life, plus the artwork, etc. Unfortunately, the Church was closed, but the outside was beautiful. We then proceeded to the famous Belem pastry shop for custard (so good, especiallywith cinnamon sprinkled on top). Next we saw the Monument to the Discoveries -- which is impressive. Our guide also poi Ted out other things to see and do. One site not mentioned, but definitely worth seeing is the National Coach Museum (amazing). I would definitely recommend this tour to others.

Jo was a fantastic guide! Very warm, informative and thoughtful. The monastery details were incredibly well told and interesting. The pastry treat was the best we had on our entire trip. The monks recipe has still got it! One of the tour guests Dominic West, an actor, disappeared on the tour right before the pastry treat. He left early without telling the guide and took his ear piece with him. It was very unfortunate for the guide as he was very upset when he could not locate him! What a hassle for our great guide, so writing detail here to ensure our guide is recognized as being quite excelllent and that this missing ear piece and guests disappearance is noted as erratic behavior.

It's hard to say which I loved better, skipping the line or the guided tour. No, although it was glorious to walk past scores of people standing in line (without making eye contact), it was even better to learn from Joco (Joua) our expert guide. He shared pearls of wisdom, history of the monestary, and background information we would have never known. If not for him, we would have walked past doors and sites without knowing their significance. Do yourself a favor, book the tour and make your experience exponentially better.

Lo que más me gustó del tour en el Monasterio de los Jerónimos fue la increíble arquitectura manuelina, con sus detalles tan elaborados y simbólicos. El claustro en particular me impresionó mucho por su belleza y tranquilidad, es un lugar perfecto para detenerse y apreciar cada elemento. También me pareció muy interesante la historia del monasterio y su relación con los viajes de exploración portugueses, lo que le da aún más significado al lugar.

We could skip the que. But according to the monastery rules ques could be skipped in the morning and not in the afternoon. For our case, we started 15 mins late and their were no que for 2:00 PM but only for 2:30 so we got through. Our guide Beatrice was very knowledgeable and made our tour enjoyable. Everything was delivered with so much passion that it was admirable. So really happy about getting the guided tour.

The guide Joao gave us excellent explanations, the Jeronimos Monastery was beautiful, and the monument of discoveries was quite impressive. It was great to have skip the line tickets, as the line was huge. And it was wonderful to have Pasteis de Belem tasting included, it has indeed a special taste. Thank you very much!

What to bring

To stay protected and hydrated, bring a hat and water—summer temperatures can rise above 25ºC.

What's not allowed

Strict dress code: Off-shoulder tops, dresses, and knee-high shorts are not recommended.

Visitors are not allowed to photograph some parts of the monastery.

Keep in mind food, beverages, large bags or backpacks are not allowed on this experience.

Accessibility

The lower level is wheelchair accessible, but some areas have cobblestones.

Wheelchairs are available for rent at the entrance.

Additional information

Entry is free for Portugal residents on Sundays and public holidays, which often leads to larger crowds. If possible, plan your visit on another day.

The Jerónimos Monastery remains closed on Monday, 1st January, Easter Sunday, 1st May, and 25th December.
