Akram Khan Company – We are but Shadows

The evening begins with an exploration of the profound Sanskrit phrase ‘Jwala Vyapnoti Akasham’, which translates approximately to - ‘rising light fills space’. Jwala, a woman caught between celebrating the birth of her daughter and mourning the death of her father, is represented as a flickering flame, an emphatic depiction of vitality. Follow Jwala’s journey through heartbreak and joy, as she strives to discover the immutable connection between life, death, and the universe. Jwala’s story is followed by another of Khan’s masterpieces - I am Ravana. This performance features an all-male Bharatanatyam ensemble accompanied by the prolific vocalist Chitra Poornima. It delves into three of the most iconic tales from the Ramayana - the abduction of Sita, the building of the bridge to Lanka, and the annihilation of Ravana and his evil forces.

Akram Khan has been one of the most influential and versatile dancers and choreographers in London. From classical Kathak to contemporary dance, Khan has mastered a wide variety of dance forms over the course of his long and successful career. He has received an array of awards for his performances and choreographies including the 2012 Laurence Olivier Award, multiple Critics’ Circle Awards, and the South Bank Show Award.
