Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel Small Group Guided Tour

Guided Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel tour with safety gear, lasting about 1 hour on site.

Getting started

Meet your certified guide at the cave entrance for a short briefing and gear handout. Tickets are checked, and safety guidelines are reviewed before entry.

What to expect

Formed roughly 5,000 years ago, this remarkable lava tube takes you through walls of cooled lava, natural rock layers, and gentle mineral tones shaped over time. Man-made paths and footbridges aid access, while natural sections preserve the cave’s raw character.

Features

• All the striking sections are well lit, bringing out textures and bands of color, making the geological details easier to see and photograph.

• Seasonal changes include delicate ice formations in winter and multi-hued mineral deposits throughout the year.

• Chambers and passages rise to ceilings reaching up to 10 meters, giving a real sense of the tunnel’s scale.

• Your certified guide shares insights into Iceland’s volcanic history and how the cave was formed.

• Safety equipment, including helmet, head torch, and in winter crampons, helps ensure steady footing on uneven ground.
