I loved Ercolano. Especially among the nice touches were Antiquarium and the oasis-like pomegranate orchard for a needed break. We could not find the Papyrus House, there was no offline or online guidance about its whereabouts. Audioguide was not under friendly, every time I paused the guide or my phone locks its screen, I would have to restart the app, restart from homescreen, search for the respective menu and then play the audio from scratch. This disrupted the flow and kind of took away motivation to listen.

Myself and my wife had an excellent day out visiting pompeii , Herculaneum and Vesuvius, our driver picked us up on time from our hotel was courteous and being a local very knowledgeable of all the areas we travelled through. He was very happy to answer all our questions. The guide we had for both Herculaneum and Pompeii was very knowledgeable and took things at our pace and was able to answer all our question. The day was hot but very enjoyable would recommend this excursion to any one.

Francesco (I think) was our tour guide for Herculaneum and he was fantastico !! He was funny & friendly & extremely knowledgeable having spent a lot of his youth hanging around Herculaneum in his free time... Herculaneum was a different experience to Pompeii & I would highly recommend visiting it as it is more preserved than Pompeii and has a fantastic museum full of artifacts. Definitely put this on your to do list if you are in the Napoli area !! ☆☆☆☆☆

Pompeii is very beautiful because of its grandeur, but Herculaneum is certainly not inferior. It is a bit smaller, but no less impressive. There seems to be just as much to see in that small town. The accompanying museum is also very nice and provides an extra insight into life in that era. It is also much less crowded than Pompeii and there are plenty of parking spaces in the area.

J’ai trouvé que ce musée nous plonge vraiment dans l’époque romaine. On peut y découvrir les maisons bien conservé, leur histoire et mieux comprendre comment vivaient les habitants à cette époque. La visite permet de bien se représenter leur quotidien et de mieux comprendre l’histoire du site. Une belle expérience pour découvrir la vie romaine de manière concrète et immersive !

As a first time visitor, the whole experience is stimulating , challenging and quite emotional. It's educational value goes without saying. So much learned that was not known beforehand. The organisation at the entrances was excellent. I shall certainly visit again next time that I am In the South of Italy.

What to expect

Herculaneum Archaeological Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Herculaneum offers a rare glimpse into daily Roman life, frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This compact site is renowned for its exceptional preservation, making it a standout among ancient ruins.

Features

Preserved structures: Walk along original Roman streets and see intact roofs, beds, doors, and even remnants of ancient food, offering a tangible connection to the past.

Frescoes and final moments: Admire vibrant frescoes and mosaics, and view the poignant remains of around 300 inhabitants, together offering a moving glimpse into daily life and the town’s final moments.

Intimate atmosphere: Enjoy a quieter visit compared to Pompeii, allowing for a more reflective and detailed exploration.

What to bring

Carry a valid photo ID or passport for verification at entry.

If you opt for a digital audio guide, bring your own headphones for a better listening experience.

Wear sturdy, comfortable footwear as the ground is uneven in many areas.

Since most of the visit takes place outdoors, pack sunscreen, sunglasses, water, and a hat. The site remains open in all weather conditions, so a light raincoat or umbrella is also useful.

What’s not allowed

Large backpacks, suitcases, and bulky luggage cannot be brought inside or on transfer services.

Food and drinks are not included and may be restricted in certain zones.

Pets are not allowed, except for certified service animals.

Smoking, alcohol, and any prohibited substances are strictly banned on-site.

Flash photography and the use of tripods or professional filming gear may be limited in some areas.

Accessibility

Due to uneven surfaces and steep sections, the site is not fully accessible and may pose challenges for visitors with reduced mobility.

Some ramp access can be arranged at the entrance for those with motor disabilities, though not all parts of the site can be reached.

Accessible restrooms are available.

There is no facility for storing luggage on-site.

Additional information

The guidebook is available only in English and in a digital, downloadable format. No hard copies available.

Children must be accompanied by an adult during the visit.

Certain areas may be closed temporarily due to restoration work or operational needs.

The site is open from 8:30am to 5pm from 15 October to 15 March (last entry 3:30pm), and from 8:30am to 7:30pm between 16 March and 14 October (last entry 6pm).

Free admission is offered on the first Sunday of each month and on select public holidays; reduced fares are available for eligible visitors with a valid ID.

If you’re using a digital audio guide app, it’s best to download it before arrival, as mobile network coverage on-site may be limited.
