Our trip to Sintra was absolutely wonderful! It was an unforgettable experience, and a big thank-you to Inez, our tour guide, who was not only an excellent driver but also a knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging guide. We learned so much about the fascinating history of Sintra, a beautiful Portuguese town with centuries of royal history and a unique blend of Moorish, medieval, and Romantic influences. It was particularly interesting to discover how Sintra became a summer retreat for Portuguese royalty and how its cultural landscape eventually earned UNESCO World Heritage status. One of the highlights was visiting Pena Palace, the spectacular, colourful palace built in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II on the site of a former 16th-century monastery. Its beautiful combination of Gothic, Moorish, Manueline, and Renaissance architectural styles makes it look like something straight out of a fairy tale. Learning about its royal history and the vision behind its construction made the visit even more special. Another unforgettable stop was Quinta da Regaleira, a truly magical place filled with mysterious gardens, underground tunnels, caves, towers, and symbolic architecture. We learned about its fascinating connections to Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, and other esoteric traditions. The famous Initiation Well, with its spiralling staircase descending deep underground, was particularly impressive and full of symbolism. Thanks to Inez, we didn't just visit beautiful places; we gained a much deeper understanding of Portugal's history, culture, architecture, and fascinating stories. Her knowledge and passion made the entire experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Sintra. Our tour guide, Carlos, was excellent. He provided a great background to understand the palaces. Can trip was smooth and tour well paced. We wanted to visit to Moorish Castle, which was not an official part of the trip. Carlos explained a way we could do so and rejoin the trip after lunch. My favorite parts were the gardens and views at Pena Palace and Moorish castle . The inside of Peña Palace was very crowded and I could have skipped. Sintra town was very lively and fun.

Everything was great, except the meeting point at the Praça da Figueira was not the pick up point, we have to wait almost 40 minutes for the guide to meet us there

Joao is an excellent guide. He was able to intelligently deliver historical stories with humour and the right amount of detail. We had a fantastic day at Sintra Palace and Quinta de Regalaria. His lunch/food recommendations were also excellent. Best red Sangria of all time - loads of fruit, fresh mint and real cinnamon stick! Thanks Joao for a memorable day in Sintra.

Everything was great - Alfonso is fantastic. BUT - the directions said to look for someone wearing a white shirt and a blue flag. He had on a yellow shirt that said Boost on it (no one knew anything about Headout tours). Anyway, we found him eventually and had a great day! Weather wasn't good at Pena Palace and the lines were super long but it was a good tour and we learned a lot about Portugal! Obrigada Alfonso!

What to bring

Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes since exploring the sprawling grounds of Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira involves a fair amount of walking.

If travelling with a child, bring a child safety seat as bus providers do not supply baby seats.
