A Truly Special Visit Booking my visit to Château d’If was incredibly easy. With my entrance ticket booked in advance, I could simply walk straight through without waiting in line. Even better, I arrived at a quiet moment and had the entire fortress almost completely to myself. That made an already fascinating and atmospheric experience even more special. Walking through the old cells and corridors in complete peace, surrounded by the history of this remarkable place, was unforgettable. Highly recommended if you’re visiting Marseille especially if you can book ahead and experience Château d’If without the crowds!

Went to Château d’If! Seriously epic dungeon vibes, dude. I couldn't even be the Count of Monte Cristo. Still totally cool, guys!

Perched upon a rocky island on the Mediterranean sits the world-renowned island fort that is Chateau d’If. Right opposite Marseille’s Vieux Port, feel surrounded by a blanket of this city’s history. Immortalized as a landmark in the famous novel from the 19th century, The Count of Monte Cristo, you don’t want to skip out on this opportunity to tour the insides.

This fort was built in 1524 as a prison by François I. With time, it gained the terrifying reputation of being the dying ground for those who resisted and opposed royal power. But the Château d’If was actually built for other noble reasons, the priority of which was given to the safety of Marseilles. Travel back in time and find yourself in the 16th century and relive scenes from the novel and movies in this iconic prison.

Important Information

Please note that there is free admission during the following days: European Heritage Days on the third weekend of Sep, and every first Sunday of the month from Nov to Mar.

Entry is free for anyone under the age of 18 years, and for European Union nationals or non-EU residents in France aged between 18 and 25 years (an ID is necessary).

Entry is free for disabled guests with an accompanying adult, jobseekers (on presentation of a certificate less than 6 months old), and holders of a valid education pass.

In case of bad weather, the Château d'If will be closed.

This ticket has no audio guides available. However, you will enjoy a subtitled film screened during your visit.

All guests are required to follow the safety instructions indicated at the entrance of the monument strictly.

Please note that some spaces might remain closed for safety reasons.

The last sea shuttle towards the castle departs at 3:15 PM.

The experience is not accessible for people with mobility issues.
