Yu Garden began as a private family retreat in the Ming dynasty and remains a defined classical garden complex in central Shanghai. Within a relatively compact area, visitors move through courtyards, ponds, pavilions, and halls that preserve a historical garden tradition inside the modern city.

The Great Rockery is one of the garden's defining features, built from Taihu rocks and designed as an artificial mountain near the entrance. Visitors who can manage the steep, uneven steps get elevated views across tiled roofs, ponds, and nearby pavilions that show how classical gardens compress landscape into limited urban space.

Yu Garden brings together koi-filled ponds, zigzag bridges, dragon-topped walls, moon gates, and carved openings that frame one scene after another.
