What to expect

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve is a renowned nature park just outside Christchurch, home to over 50 wildlife species and dedicated to conservation and education. The reserve is the only place in New Zealand where you can see the country’s ‘Big 5’ native animals in one visit.

• Kiwi nocturnal house: View the iconic kiwi bird up close in a specially designed, glass-free nocturnal house, open daily from 10:30am.

• Kea enclosure: Walk through the large enclosure to meet the world’s only alpine parrot, known for its intelligence and curiosity.

• Takahe, kaka, and tuatara: Spot one of the world’s rarest birds (takahe), a rare bush parrot (kaka), and the tuatara, often called the world’s only living dinosaur.

• Farmyard experience: Hand-feed friendly farm animals, wild eels, and birds (food available for purchase), and enjoy the relaxed setting with a café and deer paddock views.
