Toronto's waterfront is made ground. The lake once reached roughly to Front Street; everything south of it was filled in for railways and ships, and parts of that working shore are now public parks and promenades.
Start at Union Station's row of 22 limestone columns, a station a 1968 plan would have demolished. Walk under the tracks to the CN Tower, built because the new skyline blocked TV signals, then to the 1929 roundhouse with its turntable and the SkyDome, whose four-panel roof rolls open in about 25 minutes. Under the expressway, the harbour opens up: wooden WaveDecks shaped like Great Lakes shorelines, a city beach of yellow umbrellas, a 1926 powerhouse that is now a free art gallery, and a 1927 warehouse that grew a glass crown.
Nine stops, about 2.5 km and 85 minutes, in English and at your own pace. Entry to the CN Tower, the Toronto Railway Museum and the island ferry is not included.
What to bring
- Ticket code: Enter your ticket code on the Roamer redemption page from your confirmation before you set off.
- Phone and browser: Bring a charged smartphone, since the GPS map and audio run in your phone browser.
- Earphones: Bring earphones so you can hear the audio clearly as you walk.
- Mobile data or Wi-Fi: Use mobile data, or open the tour on Wi-Fi before starting if you do not have data.
- Extra layer: Bring a warm layer in spring, autumn, and winter, as the waterfront can be colder and windier than downtown.
Additional information
- Tour start: Start any day, at any hour, and replay the audio as often as you like with lifetime access.
- Best weather: Choose a clear day so you can enjoy long views from the CN Tower and across to the islands.
- Railway Museum timing: Go Wednesday to Sunday after 12:00 if you want to add the Toronto Railway Museum outside summer.
- Game days: Expect heavy crowds on Bremner Boulevard before and after Blue Jays games, so pick a morning or non-game day for a calmer walk.
- CN Tower tickets: Book CN Tower timed-entry tickets online in advance if you plan to go up the tower on a clear day.
- Ferry terminal: Note that the walk ends at Jack Layton Ferry Terminal, where the island ferries depart.
- Union Station works: Expect hoarding and signed detours at Union Station between Bay and York Streets during rebuilding.
- GPS accuracy: Expect brief GPS drift under the rail corridor on Lower Simcoe Street and under the Gardiner on Rees Street.
- Road crossings: Cross Lake Shore Boulevard and Rees Street only on green lights, as crossings take several signal stages.
- Cycle path: Watch for bikes in both directions when you step across the busy Martin Goodman Trail on Queens Quay.
- Roundhouse tracks: Keep off the display tracks at Roundhouse Park unless signs specifically say you may enter.
- Please check your final voucher for the redemption details and specific instructions.
- Your voucher will be emailed to you shortly.
