Oaxaca has almost never knocked a building down. It has changed what buildings are for.
The Dominicans' convent became a cavalry barracks, then a car park, then a museum. Its parade ground became a botanical garden. A bookbinder's house became a shrine to the servant boy who slept there and grew up to be president. Even the plaza is a reassignment: the square the Spanish gridded in 1529 had been a Mexica garrison, posted to watch the Zapotecs from outside.

Twelve stops in a loop: the Zocalo, the textile museum, Teatro Macedonio Alcala, the contemporary art museum, the Alvarez Bravo photography centre, Santo Domingo, IAGO, Casa de Juarez, the printmakers' block, the Basilica de la Soledad, San Felipe Neri and the cathedral.

Live guiding: Do not expect a live guide, as this is a fully self-guided experience.

Accessibility

Terrain: Expect a short cobblestone stretch on Calle de Ignacio Allende and some unmapped pavement.

Traffic: Take care between stops 6 and 8, where the street carries vehicle traffic.

Additional information

Best time to start: Start between 8:00 and 10:00 for the best light and quieter Zocalo and Alameda.

Midday heat: Avoid the middle of the day in the dry season, as the Soledad terrace is fully exposed.

Altitude note: Oaxaca sits at about 1,555 metres, so take the first climb slowly if arriving from sea level.

Street conditions: Note that Calle de Ignacio Allende between stops 5 and 6 is unhewn cobblestone with no mapped pavement.

Museo Textil (stop 2): This museum is free and open Mon–Fri 10:00–20:00, Sat 11:00–20:00, Sun 11:00–18:00.

Contemporary art museum (stop 4): This museum is free and closes on Mondays.

Photo centre and arts institute: The photography centre (stop 5) and graphic arts institute (stop 7) are free and close on Tuesdays.

Museo de las Culturas: This museum is ticketed and open Tue–Sun 09:00–17:00.

Botanical garden: You can only enter the botanical garden on a guided tour.

Casa de Juarez (stop 8): This site is ticketed, so confirm details at the door.

Teatro Macedonio Alcala (stop 3): The theatre has no general visiting hours.

Soledad museum: The Soledad museum is behind the church and may close on Thursdays.

Zocalo and Alameda: These main squares can be occupied by protests and tents without notice.

Tour access: You access the tour via your phone browser, so you do not need to download an app.

Pace and validity: You can start anytime, walk at your own pace, and revisit with lifetime access.
