The geyser was great and I was able to get pictures and video. For the best places to sit, you should get there early. We went on the 45 minute walk because I have a knee injury. There are a 60 and 90 minute walk also. It was great but it probably took us longer because of taking pictures and I have to be careful with my knee. I loved all the thermal activity and the craters were interesting. This was my first experience of this sort, and I am very glad we went.

Great experience slathering the mud on. Changing facilities could be larger as was crowded and this was later in the day too. But all in all a unique experience

We loved the facilities at Hell's Gate Mud baths. The staff was friendly and helpful answering all our questions. The variety of pools including mud, sulphur, warm and cool were fun as well as invigorating. The facility was excellent including clean changing areas, showers, gift shop and cafe. We enjoyed the entire Hell's Gate experience and found nice gifts to take home to our friends.

It was a wonderful relaxing experience. As a reminder, you will need to wash you swim suit and towels several times (and your hair) before the residual smell is gone, but we didn't mind. I would suggest renting suits and towels there to avoid having to wash your things.

The experience was well organised. Well executed. The staff and team were friendly. Very helpful. Went out of their way to assist. Would highly recommend this experience. Our experience started at the 4 pm timeslot and finished around at 8 o'clock.

A really great experience the Lady Knox geyser was fun and the singing excellent. The best part was admiring the wonders of nature in the volcanic thermal park I would highly recommend a visit.

The setting is good. The mud is great. Just staff in the mud area are all in a long face. The receptionists are Okie.

What to bring

Hell's Gate Mud Bath & Sulphur Spa

Bring swimwear and a towel for mud bath and spa experiences. Your swimwear and towels will smell of sulfur and require thorough cleaning afterward. We recommend using old swimwear or hiring/buying from Hell's Gate (subject to availability).

Bring a valid photo ID to match the name on your booking if requested at the entrance.

Bring comfortable footwear for walking through the geothermal reserve.

Sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle are recommended for outdoor areas.

What’s not allowed

Pets are not permitted, except for registered service animals.

Alcohol, drugs, and any form of intoxication are strictly prohibited on the premises.

Large bags, suitcases, and oversized luggage are not allowed inside the spa and geothermal areas.

Smoking is not permitted within the facility.

Use of the mud baths is restricted for guests under 2.5 years old, and the sulfur spa is restricted for infants under 6 months old.

Drones and smoking are not allowed inside the park.

Do not touch thermal water, steam vents, or leave marked paths.

Hell's Gate Mud Bath & Sulphur Spa

Shuttle transfers require advance booking and are subject to availability.

The mud bath has a time limit of 20 minutes once a day for health and safety reasons.

The mud and water can damage (tarnish) jewelry, particularly silver. To protect your items, remove them completely and do not wear them again for 24 to 48 hours.

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

Facilities: Parking, toilets near the visitor centre, gift shop, cafe.

The opening hours at Wai-o-Tapu are from 8:30am - 4:30pm, with the last entry at 3pm.

Children must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.

This is an active geothermal area, meaning the ground and water often reach boiling temperatures. Do not wander outside of designated areas

Wai-O-Tapu is a cashless on site, all major credit cards and EFTPOS are accepted.
