Why You Shouldn’t Miss This
Giverny and the Palace of Versailles are two of the most visited sights near Paris. Giverny, a village of timeless beauty, was once home to Claude Monet impressionism. Visit the famous gardens that inspired the artist, as well as his studio and home. Passionate about gardening and nature's changing colors, painter Claude Monet designed his flower and water gardens as if they were works of art.
One of the most extraordinary achievements in 17th century European art, The Palace of Versailles, continues to attract over 10 million visitors each year. An elaborate complex that once thrived as an epicenter of political power for the Kingdom of France, the royal estate has been an iconic French landmark since it was built in the late 1600s. Today, the Palace, also known as Château de Versailles, boasts 700 rooms and 250 acres of gardens waiting to be explored.
Illustrating more than five centuries of French history, the Palace not only houses remarkable works of art - it stands as a work of art itself. One of the most ornately designed rooms of all, the Hall of Mirrors features 357 mirrors, including seventeen mirror-clad arches that reflect the seventeen arcaded windows overlooking the gardens.
A place of immense beauty, Versailles stands as a symbol of France’s monarchy and lives on as the location of several important peace treaty signings, including two treaties of the 1783 Peace of Paris, by which Britain recognised the independence of the US, as well as the Treaty of Versailles, which formally ended the First World War.
Spend the day discovering two remarkable sights near Paris: Giverny and the Palace of Versailles. Begin your tour with your departure from Paris to Giverny. Soak up the world of the painter, Claude Monet, famous for painting different corners of his garden. During your visit, admire the multicolored flower beds that inspired some of his most renowned works of art, including the Clos Normand Flower Garden with its many Eastern plants, and the lush water garden, famous for its water lilies and Japanese bridge.
Then take advantage of your free time to visit Claude Monet's pink-plastered house, where he lived and worked (guided tours of the interior are not permitted due to the lack of space). Explore the reading room, leading into the larder and the artist's studio. Visit the bright yellow dining room, which has been reconstructed down to the very last detail, with earthenware dishes and a blue-tiled kitchen. At the end of your visit, explore the village and treat yourself to some souvenir shopping.
