The ticket system worked perfectly. The guide was very competent and didactically convincing. Thank you. However, based on our experience, we will look for a longer tour next time. It seems to make sense for the density of impressions.

This tour was much more interesting than expected. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. On the down side, when reading the info about this tour it says backpacks are not allowed and no shorts and bare shoulders. We were one of the few who followed these rules. Should be removed from info page since it's not enforced

The site is magnificent, you wouldn't think you were in Rome. The guide was very nice, with important information to understand the respect to be shown to this site and the history of Christianity. The visit was too quick and we would have liked more.

    How impressive the catacombs are
  • Descend into Rome’s Catacombs of St. Callixtus on a 40-minute guided tour exploring early Christian history underground.

    Getting started

Arrive at the Catacombs of St. Callixtus entrance located on the Appian Way and present your smartphone voucher at the ticket office. You’ll be directed to your guide, who will provide a brief introduction before leading your group into the catacombs.

    What to expect

    Catacombs of St. Callixtus

Recognized as one of Rome’s most significant ancient burial sites, St. Callixtus is the largest of the Roman catacombs and dates back to the 3rd century. It served as the final resting place for many early popes and Christian martyrs. These extensive underground tunnels hold the remains of around half a million Christians, offering a unique window into the city’s religious past.

    Features

    • Ancient burial chambers: Walk through labyrinthine corridors lined with crypts, where early Christians and popes were entombed, highlighting the site’s spiritual and historical importance.

    • Early Christian symbols: Discover mysterious symbols and inscriptions carved into the stone, each revealing stories of faith and resilience from centuries past.

    • Expert guided insights: Your guide shares context on the catacombs’ role in Rome’s religious timeline, making complex history accessible and engaging for all visitors.

    • Add-on: get transfers from the city centre to these catacombs and back, so you don't need to waste time figuring out bus lines and interchanges.

  • What to bring

    • Comfortable walking shoes (uneven surfaces inside the catacombs)

    • Light jacket (temperatures underground are cooler)

    What’s not allowed

    • Photography & filming inside the catacombs and Capuchin Crypt

    • Large bags or backpacks

    • Smoking, food, and drinks inside the monuments

    Accessibility

    • There are 50 irregular steps to descend and ascend, with no seating area or elevator, so it's not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

    • Not recommended for visitors with claustrophobia, mobility issues, or respiratory conditions

    Additional info

    • Dress code: Knees and shoulders must be covered inside religious sites.

    • This is a walking tour with stairs and uneven paths, so be prepared for moderate physical activity.
