Yvonne, Princesse de Bourgogne

Duration

2 hrs 35 mins

Witness a revival of Philippe Boesmans’ Yvonne, Princesse de Bourgogne at the renowned Paris Opera. Catch the breathtaking story that reveals the darkness and cynicism of the human psyche.

  • Princess Yvonne is the antithesis of a princess: she is apathetic, ugly and antisocial. Prince Philippe, who is bored with the endless ceremonies at court chooses Yvonne as his fiancee. King Ignace and Queen Marguerite are appalled at Philippe’s decision and the courtiers mock the prince’s decision. Yvonne’s refusal to speak causes a great deal of provocation and the tension mounts at court.

Commissioned by the Paris Opera, legendary composer Philippe Boesmans’ opera was critically acclaimed in its premiere in 2009. The opera is based on Witold Gombrowicz’s eponymous 1935 play and continues to portray the cynicism and dark humor that made the original so popular. Renowned director and dramatist Luc Bondy brings the gripping production to stage with the help of librettist Marie-Louise Bischofberger. The opera is being revived for the first time after Bondy’s unfortunate passing, and with a talented cast at the helm, the production promises to thoroughly entertain opera fans from across the world!
