About Santiago de Compostela Cathedral

The cathedral complex extends beyond the basilica into museum galleries, the 12th-century Gelmírez Palace, a 16th-century cloister, and the Pórtico de la Gloria. Collections include Flemish tapestries designed from cartoons by Francisco de Goya and David Teniers, liturgical silver, and the 12th-century Codex Calixtinus. Upper terrace viewpoints add elevated views over Obradoiro Square during the museum circuit.

See Master Mateo's Pórtico de la Gloria

The Pórtico de la Gloria was carved by Master Mateo between 1168 and 1188 and remains one of the cathedral's defining works. After restoration completed in 2018, visitors can again see surviving medieval polychrome paint layers from the 12th to 17th centuries inside this restricted chamber.

Visit the crypt beneath the High Altar

The Crypt of Saint James sits directly below the High Altar and holds a silver reliquary chest containing remains attributed to Saint James the Greater and his disciples St. Theodore and St. Athanasius. The space also preserves Roman stone masonry foundations dating back to the 1st century AD.

Stand at the end point of the Camino de Santiago

The cathedral is the spiritual terminus of the Camino de Santiago, and that role shapes the visit as much as the architecture. Pilgrims and leisure travelers converge on Obradoiro Square before entering the basilica, giving the cathedral a direct connection to one of Europe's best-known pilgrimage routes.

The present cathedral began in 1075, while later additions transformed its appearance over centuries. Visitors can compare the Baroque Obradoiro facade from 1738 to 1750 with the south Platerías portal, the only exterior portal that still preserves original Romanesque relief sculpture.

Praterías Entrance

On the south side facing Platerías Square, this entrance is used for free general admission to the nave. It is the access point for individual prayer, crypt visits, and the route toward the altar-hugging ritual. The entrance has stone steps, with step-free ramp access available at the Platerías entrance.

Obradoiro Museum Entrance

On the west side at the lower level of the Obradoiro facade, this entrance serves ticket holders for the Pórtico de la Gloria and Cathedral Museum, as well as guided groups. Digital vouchers are scanned here directly from a mobile screen, without counter validation. An elevator is available in the museum lobby.
