The opera is based on Margaret Atwood’s seminal novel, The Handmaid's Tale. The story has become famous as the novel has been made into films and a popular Emmy and BAFTA award-winning TV series. The musical score in the opera is inspired by minimalism, medieval chanting, and gospel music. Gilead's brutality is depicted in the music itself. Directed by ENO's Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon, this power-packed production is conducted by Joana Carneiro, a contemporary music specialist. Mezzo-sopranos Kate Lindsey and Susan Bickley play Offred and her mother respectively. Soprano Rachel Nicholls is cast in the role of Aunt Lydia, whereas John Findon plays Luke.
