I arrived 20 minutes before my 10:00 a.m. tour at the Cafe location specified. I showed the representative the ticket on my phone and gave him my name. He wrote me out a ticket and told me to join the group that was just leaving. My ticket said fast track and did not mention a guided tour. I told the representative that I did not think this was the right tour. He insisted it was and that I needed to join the group leaving at that moment. It was a large group and I was unable to speak to the tour guide. Once we were in the palace and before we entered the Harem, I did speak to the guide and he said I was on the wrong tour. He tried to reach my tour by phone, but they had already left and were somewhere on the grounds. He gave me admission to the Harem and told me to speak to the Cafe representative when I left the palace. I did go back and they said that I would have to contact the office for a refund. I asked about the second tour to Hagia Sophia that I had purchased as part of the combined ticket and they directed me to another cafe. When I arrived there, the representative directed me to the tour guide and I was told that I had to join a tour that was going to the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia or forfeit my outing, so I did join the tour though I had already toured the Blue Mosque. Altogether, it was a confusing and frustating experience.

What to bring

Topkapi Palace

Wear comfortable walking shoes; there’s a lot of ground to cover, including cobblestone areas.

Carry a bottle of water, especially in warmer months, as much of the site is outdoors.

Use wired headphones for audio tours, signal can be weak inside thick-walled sections.

Bring sunscreen or a hat, as many courtyards and waiting areas are exposed to the sun.

Hagia Sophia

Wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.

Women also need to keep their heads covered. Scarves and head wraps are available at the entrance if you do not have your own.

Bring a small bag for your shoes, as you need to remove them in prayer areas.

Topkapi Palace

Flash photography is prohibited in areas like the Treasury and Sacred Relics Room.

Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the palace buildings.

Touching exhibits or artifacts is strictly prohibited.

Hagia Sophia

Access to the main prayer hall on the ground floor is restricted to tourists.

Flash photography is not permitted, especially near mosaics.

Accessibility

Topkapi Palace

While some outdoor areas and courtyards are accessible, full wheelchair accessibility is limited due to cobblestone paths, stairs, and narrow corridors, especially in the Harem section.

Hagia Sophia

The Upper Gallery visiting area is not accessible to wheelchair users, as you have to climb a flight of stairs to reach the second floor.

Plan for at least 2 to 3 hours to explore the courtyards and inside highlights properly.

The Treasury and Sacred Relics Room are often crowded. Arrive early in the day or in the late afternoon hours to enjoy a quieter ambiance.

Hagia Sophia

As an active site of worship, the mosque is restricted to tourists during prayer hours. Friday prayers are held between noon and 2:30pm.

Arrive early in the day, for the security lines run until the courtyards during the summer months (June to August).
