The Snow Room was a real highlight and felt surprisingly authentic. The overall layout and storytelling work very well and keep the experience engaging without feeling overdone. The Hägglunds ride was great fun while still giving a good sense of how challenging Antarctic logistics can be. The staff were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to share their insights.

★★★★★ From the USA and completely blown away — the closest I may ever get to Antarctica! My visit to the Christchurch International Antarctic Centre was absolutely unforgettable. I’m a big traveller from the United States, and on this trip to New Zealand I realized I’ve now visited every continent except Antarctica. Because I suffer from severe motion-induced vertigo, crossing the famously rough Southern Ocean is probably not in the cards for me — so I never expected to feel like I’d truly experienced Antarctica. And yet… here I was. This Centre felt like the next best thing — almost like being there. The exhibits are immersive, fascinating, and beautifully designed. One thing I really appreciated is that you can move at your own pace: spend as much or as little time at each area as you want. It never felt rushed, overwhelming, or overly “touristy” — just engaging and genuinely interesting. The 4D Antarctic experience was fun, informative, and full of surprises, and the Antarctic Storm Room was an absolute highlight. Feeling the power of a simulated Antarctic blizzard was thrilling — and the fact that the Centre provides proper jackets made it easy to fully embrace the experience. I loved learning about the Little Blue Penguins (Kororā) and the huskies too. I also can’t say enough about the staff. The team at the Centre was incredibly helpful and kind. I was unsure about the Hägglund all-terrain vehicle ride, and they took the time to explain exactly what it involved so I could make an informed decision — no pressure at all. That kind of care makes a huge difference. They were also fantastic with my luggage: I was on my way to the airport but far too early to check my bags, and they happily stored everything in a secure, locked room. Seamless and stress-free. And then there was the gift shop — which I fully expected to breeze through… and absolutely did not. I ended up buying some fun Kiwi and Antarctic souvenirs that I never planned on, and I’m so glad I did. This experience exceeded my expectations in every possible way. If you’ve ever dreamed of Antarctica — or suspect you may never actually make it there — this Centre is an absolute must-do.
