The planetarium also houses an Astronomical Observatory (under renovation) and a library for visitors to explore and peruse. Planetarium de Marinha was inaugurated on July 20, 1965, to honor the 10-year death anniversary of Calouste Gulbenkian. It was constructed as a part of the Museu de Marinha or Navy Museum.
Besides its excellent exhibitions and sessions in the dome, the planetarium is still a part of several active national and international astronomy projects.
