My visit to Castel Sant’Angelo was one of the highlights of my time in Rome, combining incredible history with breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the Vatican. Walking through the ancient fortress, which once served as Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum and later as a papal refuge, gave me a fascinating glimpse into centuries of Roman history and architecture. The experience became even more memorable at sunset, when the terraces overlooking the Tiber River and St. Peter’s Basilica created an unforgettable atmosphere.

The bridge leading up to the castle was marvelous. At the time of our visit we got in without a line with our timed ticket. The staff was one of the friendliest and helpful out of all the attractions we visited while in Rome. Regarding the exhibitions, we would have liked some more weaponry, but the macetts and modells were amazingly detailed. The roof is one of the best views and photo spots in Rome. We would happily visit again, should we return to Rome.

De Engelenburcht is een prachtig gebouw en de audiotour maakte mijn bezoek nog interessanter. Vaak vind ik audiotours wat langdradig of onduidelijk, maar deze tour was heel goed te volgen en was erg interessant en precies lang genoeg.

Once we managed to get inside, with the help of a Castello manager who arranged for new tickets to be printed (could not get through to Headout for clarification), and once I had figured out how to use the audio guide, we very much enjoyed the visit as there was much to see. Wish it had been clear that you have to book ahead and separately for access to the passage to the Vatican.

Die Engelsburg war ein tolles Erlebnis. Leider war der Audioguide verwirrend. Die Nummern der einzelnen Stationen passten nicht und die Wegbeschreibungen dahin waren auch falsch, sodass wir diesen fast nicht nutzen konnten, weil man gar nicht wusste, wo man war. Wir haben diesen dann nicht mehr benutzt.

Visitors with mobility restrictions can enter the castle free of charge, along with one accompanying carer, by presenting valid certification at the entrance.

Some areas of the museum including the spiral ramp and terrace are not accessible to wheelchair users.

Additional information

Mandatory security checks would still be required at the entrance even with fast-track entry tickets.

EU citizens between 18 and 25 years of age get reduced entry tickets.
