Getting started

Arrive at 592 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, and check in for your session. After a quick briefing, you’ll be issued an orange jumpsuit to wear over your clothes before entering the themed venue. Once suited up, you’ll be shown to your assigned cell, where the immersive experience begins.

What to expect

Alcotraz Penitentiary

Alcotraz recreates the atmosphere of a cinematic penitentiary, blending interactive theatre with a cocktail bar. You’ll spend 1 hour and 45 minutes as an “inmate,” surrounded by movie-like sets and a cast of characters, including crooked guards and fellow convicts.

Orange jumpsuit on arrival: Slip into your provided jumpsuit (sizes XS–4XL available, or tie it around your waist if preferred) to blend in with the other inmates and set the tone for your time inside.

Themed cell seating: Each group is seated in a cell, with space for up to six guests per cell. Smaller groups may share with others, while larger groups are placed in adjacent or opposite cells.

Four cocktails or mocktails included: Throughout your sentence, expert mixologists (the “prison canteen convicts”) will serve you four personalized cocktails or non-alcoholic mocktails, using a full range of mixers, bitters, syrups, and ingredients. Beer or wine substitutions are available if requested at booking.

Interactive performances with actors and storylines: Engage with actors playing inmates, guards, and the Warden. You can choose to participate in the unfolding story—collude with guards, become the Warden’s informant, or simply enjoy the show from your cell.

Immersive set design: The venue features detailed prison décor, atmospheric lighting, and sound effects, creating a convincing and playful environment for the experience.

Wrapping up

At the end of your session, you’ll be released from your cell and can collect your belongings from the storage boxes provided. No food or merchandise is available on site, and there is no coat check, so plan accordingly. If you’ve booked a non-alcoholic ticket and wish to upgrade to cocktails, this can be arranged for an additional fee before your visit.

What to bring

Bring a valid photo ID, as all guests must be at least 18 years old and ID is required for entry.

Wear light clothing, as you will be required to put on an orange jumpsuit over your clothes upon arrival.

Food is not served or available for purchase on site, and outside food is not permitted.

Pets are not allowed, except for service dogs by prior arrangement.

Smoking, vaping, drugs, and flammable items are strictly prohibited inside the venue.

Professional photography equipment and tripods are not permitted; personal photography is allowed as long as it does not disturb other guests.

Merchandise is not available for purchase at the event.

There is no coat check available, but storage boxes are provided in each cell for your belongings.

Guests requiring assistance are entitled to apply for one free pass for their personal assistant or support worker, subject to availability.

Both deaf and visually impaired guests will be able to enjoy the experience.

Seating is provided for all guests throughout the experience.

The minimum group size is 2 guests, and each cell can seat a maximum of 6 guests.

Orange jumpsuits in sizes XS to 4XL are provided and must be worn over your clothes; they can also be tied around the waist for comfort.

No strobe lights are used during the experience.

Alcohol is only permitted within the designated areas as specified by the venue.

Restrooms are available on site; please ask staff for directions if needed.

If you need to bring a service dog, please contact the venue in advance to make arrangements.

If you require a private cell, book for 4 to 6 guests; smaller groups may be seated with others if necessary.

Changes to your booking date or time are permitted up to 48 hours before your scheduled session, subject to availability.

Refunds are not allowed except as required under Australian Consumer Law.
