Pro tips to help you make a pick

Pick up a Garden Map when you enter. Kirstenbosch is extensive, and having the map makes it easier to connect the central gardens with the upper slopes and walking trails.

If the Boomslang is a priority, approach it from Rycroft Gate when possible. SANBI identifies this as the best route for wheelchair users because of the steep terrain elsewhere in the Arboretum.

Consider joining a guided walk if you want more context about the Garden’s plants, history and biodiversity rather than simply exploring independently.

Leave time for the natural areas beyond the formal gardens. The fynbos and forest trails provide a very different experience from the landscaped sections near the visitor facilities.

For a relaxed family visit, use the lawns and picnic areas as a base and explore nearby highlights in shorter loops rather than attempting the entire estate in one go.

About Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden

Kirstenbosch brings together cultivated gardens, indigenous plant collections, natural forest, fynbos and mountain landscapes across a 200-hectare estate. Highlights range from the Conservatory and Cycad Amphitheatre to the Arboretum, Fragrance Garden and Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway. Its setting within the Cape Floral Region makes a visit especially rewarding for travellers interested in South Africa’s extraordinary plant diversity.

Did you know?

Kirstenbosch’s estate covers about 200 hectares, with approximately 50 hectares of cultivated gardens and another 150 hectares of natural forest and fynbos on the lower eastern slopes of Table Mountain.

The Boomslang was inspired by the skeleton of a snake. Its 130-metre steel-and-timber structure winds through the Arboretum and reaches about 12 metres above the ground.

Kirstenbosch forms part of the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage property recognised for its exceptional plant diversity and high level of endemism.

The Arboretum contains more than 450 southern African tree species, including species from subtropical eastern South Africa that thrive on Kirstenbosch’s warm, north-facing slopes.

Kirstenbosch’s Braille Trail is designed to let visitors with visual impairments explore indigenous forest using their senses. Its guide rope and information points include large-print and Braille signs.

Why visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden?

A botanical garden beneath Table Mountain

Kirstenbosch occupies the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, creating a dramatic backdrop for its collections of southern African plants. The estate combines cultivated gardens with natural forest and fynbos, so the experience changes from carefully designed landscapes to wilder mountain vegetation as you explore.

Walk through the treetops on the Boomslang

The Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway, popularly known as the Boomslang, curves through the Arboretum and rises as high as 12 metres above ground. The 130-metre walkway offers changing perspectives over the trees, Garden and surrounding mountains.

Discover the Cape’s remarkable fynbos

Kirstenbosch showcases several types of fynbos, including Peninsula Granite Fynbos and Peninsula Sandstone Fynbos. Look for proteas, ericas and restios among the distinctive vegetation that characterises the Cape Floral Region.

Explore gardens with very different personalities

From the arid-plant displays of the Conservatory to the Fragrance Garden, Sculpture Garden, Cycad Amphitheatre and Dell, Kirstenbosch offers a varied sequence of landscapes. Each area reveals a different aspect of South Africa’s indigenous plant heritage.

Combine nature with easygoing outdoor exploration

Kirstenbosch is more than a collection of planted beds. You can picnic on the lawns, follow signposted trails, watch birds, discover sculptures and spend time simply enjoying the mountain scenery. The combination makes it particularly appealing for families and travellers who want an unhurried outdoor experience.

Plan your visit

Gate 1 — Visitors’ Centre

Gate 1 is the main visitor entrance and includes the Visitors’ Centre, ticket facilities, parking and Vida e Caffè. The City Sightseeing bus also stops here. Accessible parking and a stop-and-drop area are available.

Gate 2 — Centre for Home Gardening

Gate 2 provides access near the Centre for Home Gardening and Tea Room. It also has accessible parking. This entrance is useful for visitors focusing on the lower and central Garden areas.

Gate 3 — Rycroft Gate

Gate 3, also known as Rycroft Gate, provides access towards the upper Garden and mountain-side areas. It has a stop-and-drop facility and is the recommended entry route for wheelchair users visiting the Boomslang, although assistance is needed because of steep gradients.

Well organized, already in time and very friendly. But too less historical. Not so much old historical fragments. The best was the funny BusGuide and the explanations of the prisoner guide.

We had an amazing time in Table Mountain. The open tickets were great as we stayed all day there. Easy to get through and back. The only problem was when I booked the tickets, tickets didn't arrive until the following morning which made me worry. Tried email but it was rejected until I messaged, ticket s were sent as initially it said 4 hrs. Thought it was scam.
