Zoals vorig jaar de Caminito del Rey een reisdoel was, zo stond dit jaar Sintra op ons lijstje. Het werd ons afgeraden om met eigen vervoer te gaan. De burgemeester, zo begrepen we van onze Uber-chauffeur, wil alle voertuigen uit zijn dorpje weren. Behalve die van de bewoners natuurlijk. Uber dus? Ja, dat bleek toch het meest praktisch en uiteindelijk ook het goedkoopst te zijn. Vooral als je een chauffeur treft die zelf in Sintra woont. Hij gaf ons meteen tips over hoe we het beste van de ene naar de andere kant konden komen, omdat we eerst Pena Palace en daarna Quinta da Regaleira wilden bezoeken, die een stuk verderop ligt. Sintra is niet alleen bijzonder door haar kleurrijke paleizen, kastelen en romantische tuinen, maar ook door het microklimaat dat er heerst. Het is hier veel koeler en vochtiger dan in Lissabon. Dat microklimaat heeft er mede voor gezorgd dat hier door de eeuwen heen koningen, aristocraten en rijke buitenlanders hun buitenverblijven bouwden. In de 19e eeuw kreeg Sintra zijn huidige sprookjesachtige karakter. Koning Ferdinand II liet een vervallen klooster ombouwen tot het spectaculaire Pena Palace. Een bijzondere combinatie van allerlei stijlen: gotiek, Moorse architectuur, renaissance en zelfs Egyptische invloeden. Rond het paleis liet hij een enorm romantisch park aanleggen met exotische bomen, vijvers, fonteinen en kronkelende paden. Als je door dit park wandelt, waan je je in een sprookjesachtige wereld. Maar ja...met al die toeristen! 😉

I've been to many countries and many castles in Europe - this was by far the most unique and beautiful. Absolutely worth the medium hike up from the garden entrance to the palace. The inside was stunning but the outside was something out of a movie. I could not get enough pics. Just a note: you definitely need to take some form of transport up to the garden gates. Its like... way up the mountain and it takes a good 30 minutes even on a bus. We also loved the Regalia - prepare for some walking, its actually quite a large park with a few attractions within it which I was not expecting. its also about a 20 minute walk from the main Sintra square, up hill. We were hoofing it to make it to our slot on time from where we parked.

O Palácio da Pena é certamente o palácio mais bonito de Sintra. Com cores vibrantes e arquitetura da era romântica de Portugal, ele é um must go de Sintra. Realmente é necessário ir. Para subir ao palácio, recomendo pegar o transfer pago, só 4,50 euros e te economiza tempo e fôlego porque a subida é comprida e íngreme. A visita essencial dura cerca de 2 horas, enquanto o tour completo do palácio pode levar até 4 horas. Agora, se você vai conhecer os jardins também, esteja preparado para um dia inteiro de passeio, porque são 85 hectares de jardim. Obviamente você não vai conseguir ver tudo, mas certamente irá se maravilhar com os cenários pelos quais conseguir passar.

El Palacio da Pena es un lugar espectacular y una visita imprescindible en Sintra. El palacio es precioso, tanto por su arquitectura y colores como por las increíbles vistas que ofrece. Recomiendo comprar las entradas con antelación y elegir bien el horario, ya que suele haber mucha afluencia y las entradas pueden agotarse. También es importante llegar con tiempo y llevar calzado cómodo, porque desde la entrada hay que caminar y recorrer varias zonas con pendientes. Mi consejo es subir en autobús o utilizar el transporte disponible, en lugar de hacerlo caminando, para ahorrar energía y disfrutar mejor de la visita. Sin duda, una experiencia que vale mucho la pena.

Sur les conseils de Headout concernant les horaires les plus adaptés pour la visite nous avons accéder directement au Palais de la Peña sans trop d'attente et sans trop de monde pour une période estivale normalement chargée. Réservation facile et rapide via le site. Nous avons été totalement satisfaits et nous avons donc pris d'autres billets pour d'autres attractions sur Lisbonne. A recommander

Absolutely lovely! The tickets were easily accessible, downloadable, and Headout really eliminated any sort of worry during our day trip to Sintra. The castles were stunning, we had magnificent weather, and both buying the combo made Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira super doable to visit in one day. Highly recommend!

Seeing the palace was nice however be prepared for long lines and barley an opportunity to get a photo becaue there are so many people. We don't even get all the way to the castle on this trip because the cafe was closed and we couldn't hike anymore without getting water. It is beautiful however bring water, wear comfortable sneakers and be prepared to wait in long lines to get in and get on the bus

The actual palace was really interesting and very beautiful. The amount of time spent queuing outside and then again inside despite have pre booked tickets was disappointing and annoying. We felt overwhelmed by the crowds and felt there were too many people admitted at one time and this took the edge off the day.

Getting started

Head to the main entrance of Pena Park. Depending on your ticket type, show your digital or printed voucher for access. If you’ve booked the transport upgrade, take the shuttle from the park entrance up to the palace. Security checks are standard, so keep your ticket ready and allow time for queues.

What to bring

Please wear comfortable walking shoes as you'll have to do a considerable amount of walking.

Make sure to bring refillable water bottles to refuel.

Remember to bring a valid ID for ticket verification.

What's not allowed

Your furry friends are unfortunately not allowed (except guide dogs).

Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the palace.

Avoid bringing large bags or luggage.

Shutter bugs take note, tripods and drones are prohibited here.

Accessibility

Guide dogs are permitted.

Wheelchair access is available in certain areas; however, some parts of the Palace and park may be challenging due to uneven terrain and stairs.

The audio guide is available on the app. Instructions to download will be shared with your ticket—bring your own headphones and a fully charged phone.

Portugal residents can enjoy free access to parks and monuments on Sundays and public holidays

The attraction may be crowded, so expect some waiting time, especially at the security checkpoint (15–20 minutes).

Please use the house tour entrance instead of the main gate.

About 30 km from Lisbon, Pena Palace sits in Sintra, where parking is available in the historic center or outer lots, though spaces can be limited.

The shuttle service covers round-trip transfers between the park entrance and Pena Palace.
