This was an amazing tour! João was fantastic—extremely welcoming, personable, and friendly. He was also incredibly knowledgeable about the monastery and shared so much interesting history throughout the tour. The tour itself was outstanding, and I highly recommend it. The monastery is absolutely stunning, and there is so much to learn. Even a week later, I’m still thinking about what a wonderful experience it was. The visit to Pastéis de Belém was an added bonus and a perfect opportunity to try the famous pastry. We also loved the final stop at the Monument to the Discoveries. There was so much to take in, and ending the tour by the water was a beautiful touch. There are also several charming restaurants nearby if you want to stay and enjoy the area. This is a must-book tour if you’re in Lisbon—our trip would not have been the same without it!

Visiting Jerónimos Monastery was an unforgettable experience. The entry process was smooth and well-organized, which made the visit stress-free from the start. The architecture is absolutely breathtaking—every detail, from the intricate carvings to the grand cloisters, is stunning. It felt like stepping back in time. Wir haben uns per Audio-Guide (auf dem Handy) durch das Kloster führen lassen. Gut gemacht und informativ. Eine Wegbeschreibung passte nicht ganz, weil einige wenige Bereiche aufgrund von Bauarbeiten derzeit nicht zugänglich sind. Wir hatten den ersten Zeit-Slot 9:30 Uhr gebucht und waren kurz vor 9 Uhr vor Ort, da war die Warteschlange noch keine Schlange 😊 Nach dem Kloster kann man noch die Kirche besichtigen, dazu muss man sich draußen allerdings noch mal anstellen. Hat aber auch nicht so sehr lange gedauert.

La visita al monasterio fue espectacular! La audio guía que tiene Headout es maravillosa pues te da instrucciones detalladas de cómo moverte en el lugar para no perderte y te va mostrando cada espacio con detalle. Aparte de contar sobre arquitectura e historia, también te da datos curiosos del lugar lo cual enriquece la visita. La aplicación es fácil de usar y además te envían instrucciones al correo electrónico. Sin duda seguiré usando Headout para mis próximos tours.

My wife and I visited Portugal for the first time in April 2026. Our guided tour with a private company was canceled due to Good Friday services. There were several people in the line ahead of us but we only had to wait for 10 minutes, not bad. The Monastery is beautiful and very well kept. Also, habing the tombs of very important Portugueses adds to the cultural aspect of the visit. The audio guide provides a lot of good information and it is very easy to use.

The site was incredibly beautiful and I love the history. I looked up more info when I got home. I wish I had been able to download the audio. Even though we had reservations, the line was very long and we had to wait in the heat without being able to sit down. Then, once inside, we also were not permitted to sit and contemplate the beauty of the site. It is hard for people over 60 to stand on hard surfaces for so long. I would like to have stayed longer and seen more of the monastery.

What to bring

To stay protected and hydrated, bring a hat and water—summer temperatures can rise above 25ºC.

What's not allowed

Strict dress code: Off-shoulder tops, dresses, and knee-high shorts are not recommended.

Visitors are not allowed to photograph some parts of the monastery.

Keep in mind food, beverages, large bags or backpacks are not allowed on this experience.

Accessibility

The lower level is wheelchair accessible, but some areas have cobblestones.

Wheelchairs are available for rent at the entrance.

The church is a part of Jerónimos Monastery and offers free entry, but you must join a separate line to enter.

The monastery is a crowd-puller, and wait times can stretch to 2 hours during peak hours. Plan smart: arrive early and book tickets online in advance.

To avoid the rush hour madness, we recommend the guided tour with 9:30am priority access.

Entry is free for Portugal residents on Sundays and public holidays, which often leads to larger crowds. If possible, plan your visit on another day.

The Jerónimos Monastery remains closed on Monday, 1st January, Easter Sunday, 1st May, and 25th December.
