What to expect

Four landmarks in Sintra, all known for their stunning architecture, lush gardens, and intricate details, combined in a single day's guided tour.

Perched high above Sintra, Pena Palace is Portugal's great Romantic show-off. Built in the 19th century on the ruins of a monastery, its bold colors and eclectic design made it a royal summer retreat and later a UNESCO-listed icon.

Features

• Climb up to the terraces: Head outside for sweeping views over Sintra's forests and hills. On a clear day, the palace's hilltop setting makes the landscape part of the experience.

• Explore the royal rooms: Step into rooms once used by the Portuguese royal family, from the dining room to private chambers, kitchens and ornate spaces that reveal palace life.

• Spot the famous Triton: Look out for the mythical Triton guarding one of the palace entrances. Half-human and half-fish, he's one of Pena Palace's weirdest and most memorable details.

Quinta da Regaleira is where Sintra gets wonderfully strange. Created in the early 20th century by wealthy António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, this estate blends Gothic architecture, secret symbols, and mysterious gardens into a UNESCO-listed wonder.

Features

• Descend the Initiation Well: Walk down the estate's famous spiral well, built like an upside-down tower. Its mysterious design and symbolism make it Quinta da Regaleira's star attraction.

• Explore tunnels and hidden passages: Follow underground tunnels linking wells, grottos and gardens. You never quite know what is around the next corner, which is exactly what makes exploring so fun.

• Wander through the enchanted gardens: Take your time among towers, fountains, statues and grottos scattered across the grounds. This is less a formal garden and more a giant architectural treasure hunt.

The Moorish Castle has been watching over Sintra since the 8th or 9th century. Built during the Islamic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, its hilltop walls once guarded the region and today offer some of Sintra's biggest views.

Features

• Walk along the ancient walls: Follow the fortress walls as they snake across the hilltop. It's a proper walk, with dramatic drops, stone towers and plenty of opportunities to feel like a medieval lookout.

• Climb the castle towers: Make your way up the towers for views stretching across Sintra, the surrounding countryside and, on clear days, all the way towards the Atlantic.

• Discover centuries of history: Look beyond the dramatic walls to uncover the castle's story, from its Moorish origins to its later Christian occupation and eventual Romantic-era restoration.

Monserrate Palace is Sintra's quieter architectural gem, with roots stretching back centuries and its current look shaped in the 19th century. Its blend of Gothic, Moorish and Indian influences sits within one of Portugal's most remarkable gardens.

Features

• Marvel at the palace interiors: Look up, because the details are everywhere. Delicate arches, intricate plasterwork and richly decorated rooms make Monserrate Palace an architectural feast.

• Explore the botanical gardens: Wander through gardens filled with plants from around the world, including species brought from far beyond Portugal. It's an easy place to lose track of time.

• See the palace's exotic architecture: Notice how different architectural influences come together throughout the building. Monserrate mixes styles with confidence and somehow makes the whole thing work beautifully.
