Absolutely loved visiting Mammoth Cave! It was such a unique experience and honestly so interesting seeing everything inside the cave. The walk through was beautiful, and learning about the history and how the cave was formed made it even more enjoyable. Definitely worth visiting if you’re down south — I’d highly recommend it!

Was very nostalgic for me and watching how much my child loved it made my heart sing. I didn't use the headphones as I felt it took away from my own experience, but it didn't diminish it because my 7 year old listened and relayed very enthusiastically the details of the recordings. We can't wait to explore the others

The Mammoth Cave experience was a wonderful start to our day as a surprise for my wife and son's mother-in-law (who suffers from claustrophobia but had no problem enjoying the tour so much). The 'self guided' tour allowed our group to take our own time and enjoy all that was on offer including the great gift shop.

Super easy to collect the audio guide. Absolutely stunning in the cave, just wow. We carried out our 18 month old very easily. Can't recommend enough if you are visiting the area.

My family loved being able to listen to the audio and take our time looking through the cave. My the children (6 and 4 yrs) had a wonderful time and learnt so much about the cave systems.

The staff were friendly & explained how the tour worked with the headphones. Was great that we could explore at our own pace. Was a great experience. Would highly recommend.

Getting started

Begin your visit at the main entrance, where your entry is validated, and you’ll receive your audio guide in your preferred language. Follow the pathway into the cave, starting along a boardwalk before continuing deeper into the cave.

What to expect

Located within Leeuwin–Naturaliste National Park, Mammoth Cave is a natural time capsule where fossil remains of long-extinct Australian megafauna have been discovered. As you move through the cave, you’ll uncover stories of its formation, fossil history and the unique environment that has preserved these

remarkable finds.

Features

Self-guided audio tour: Explore at your own pace with commentary available in multiple languages, sharing insights into the cave’s geology

and fossil discoveries.

Ancient fossil remains: See real megafauna fossils, including a 50,000-year-old zygomaturus jawbone still embedded in the cave wall

Limestone formations: Wander through chambers featuring stalactites, stalagmites and seasonal flowstone, shaped over thousands of years

Cave pathway: Begin along a boardwalk into the first chamber, then continue through the cave via stairs and handrails

Forest exit: Finish your journey with a walk through marri and karri forest, or return via the entrance if you prefer to avoid the final climb

What to bring

Comfortable enclosed walking shoes suitable for uneven surfaces and stairs.

Consider a light jacket, as cave temperatures remain between 6 °C and 14 °C year-round.

What’s not allowed

Tripods and selfie sticks are not permitted inside the cave.

The caves are delicate and fragile so we encourage you to limit the items you bring inside, for conservation and safety reasons. Please leave backpacks in the car.

Front-worn baby carriers are great for adventures, but note that backpack baby carriers are not permitted.

Pets are not permitted, except for registered service animals.

Accessibility

The first chamber is accessible via a boardwalk (approximately 30 metres).

The standard exit involves approximately 170 stairs; visitors may return via the entrance if preferred.

Allow approximately 1 hour for your visit.

Audio guides are available in English, French, German, Malay and Mandarin.

Children must be always supervised.
