St. Petersburg has historically been a melting pot of cultures and for people of different faiths. The city officially came into existence under the rule of Tsar Peter the Great in the early 18th century. However, many of its religious buildings date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Explore some of the most beautiful religious sites in the city on this walking tour.

Follow your guide to the Armenian Church of St. Catherine. Built in 1771, its interior was destroyed during Soviet times but has since undergone reconstruction. See also the Church of St. Catherine - the oldest Catholic church in the Russian Federation and the only church with the title of basilica. Visit Kazan Cathedral, named after the "miracle-making" icon of Our Lady of Kazan. Since 1932, the cathedral displayed collections from the Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism - most of which were pieces of religious art and served anti-religious propaganda purposes. A few years ago, regular services resumed in the cathedral, although it still shares space with the museum, from whose name the word "atheism" has now been removed. You will also get to see the Lutheran Church of Peter and Paul (Petrikirhe). This is one of the oldest and largest Protestant churches in Russia. During the Soviet rule, the church was requisitioned by the government and used as an indoor pool. In the 1990s, it was returned to St. Peter's Church and restored.

The biggest highlight of your tour will be your visit to one of the symbols of St. Petersburg - the Church of the Savior on Blood. It earned its name because it was built on the location of Tsar Alexander II's assassination carried out by terrorists of the ‘Narodnaya Volya’ organization. Fashioned out of hundreds of mosaics, the church has an architectural style like no other in the city. Learn about its history from your local guide, before ending the tour.
