About Groeninge Museum

The modern museum was intentionally constructed on the historic site of Eekhout Abbey, a medieval Cistercian monastery dating back to the 12th century.
The roots of the collection trace back to the early 19th century, when artworks stolen from Bruges by French forces during the Napoleonic occupation were recovered from Paris and returned to the city.
It houses Gerard David’s The Judgment of Cambyses (1498), a graphic diptych depicting a corrupt judge being flayed alive. It was commissioned specifically to hang in the Bruges Town Hall as a gruesome reminder to city magistrates to remain honest.
Jan van Eyck’s famous Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele contains microscopic details, including a subtle self-portrait of Van Eyck reflected in the shiny armor of Saint George's shield.
Before becoming a public museum, the nucleus of its collection was accumulated by the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1717 as a "free brotherhood" of local artists outside the strict guild system.
