Pro tips to help you make a pick

Chichén Itzá sees anywhere between 7,000 to more than 10,000 visitors a day, so to beat the crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures, you should ideally visit early in the morning.

The site requires a lot of walking; lightweight clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended.

The Yucatán sun can be intense, so stay hydrated and protected. Carry plenty of water as the vendors at the entrance sell it for a rather high price.

A local guide can provide deeper insights into the town’s historical, political, and architectural significance.

The light show at night offers a unique perspective on the history of Chichén Itzá.

Did you know?

The structure of El Castillo is an ancient calendar, with 365 steps representing each day of the year.

The stone masonry in the city is remarkable, to say the least, especially since those buildings achieved remarkable precision without the use of any metal tools.

The Ball Court’s acoustics allow a whisper at one end to be heard clearly at the other, demonstrating Mayan engineering skills.

The site’s name means “At the mouth of the well of the Itza,” referring to its cenotes.

Chichén Itzá was a major political and economic center from the time it was supposedly founded in the 6th century CE, all the way up to 1200 CE, the early postclassic period.

Why visit Chichén Itzá?

El Castillo - The Pyramid of Kukulcán

Witness the 30-meter tall pyramid that showcases the Mayans’ astronomical precision, especially during the equinox when a serpent-shaped shadow descends the steps.

The Great Ball Court

The largest and best-preserved ball court in Mesoamerica, where ancient Mayans played a ritualistic ball game with deep cultural significance.

The Sacred Cenote

A natural sinkhole believed to be a site for sacrificial offerings to the gods, offering insight into Mayan spiritual practices.

Temple of the Warriors

Admire the intricate carvings and towering columns that depict the might of Chichén Itzá’s warriors.

Nighttime Light Show

  1. Experience a breathtaking light and sound show that brings the ruins to life with Mayan myths and history.

Plan your visit

A wonderful experience. The only thing I would recommend is that, before booking the tour, you check with the company to see if the guide will be speaking Spanish or English, because in my case, the group was made up entirely of foreigners, but I didn’t have a problem with that since I also speak English. that said, it was a really fun time hanging out with people from other countries and learning about their cultures and beliefs, and I made a lot of friends. Believe me, the visit to Chichén Itzá was absolutely breathtaking—the guide was super nice, super friendly, and super cheerful, just like the catamaran and the crew. They included a really great snorkeling activity that we did, literally right in the middle of the sea, and it was an experience that I truly hold very close to my heart. I’m so grateful to Headout for this, and I 100% recommend it. I booked it with drop-off; I don’t know how it works with pickup, but from what I understand, the company takes care of everything. You can trust this tour because, honestly, I didn’t have a single bad experience—except that I had to pay for something that was already included, but they immediately refunded it to my account. So they’re super attentive to everything—a perfect 10 out of 10.
