Main Island Entrance (Château d’If Gate)
The Main Island Entrance, located directly opposite the ferry dock, is the only public access point to Château d’If. After getting off the ferry, you can follow a short, clearly marked path that leads straight to the fortress gate. The route and interior include cobblestones, steps, and some steep staircases. While the path from the dock to the gate is step-free, wheelchair and stroller access is limited beyond the main courtyard due to the site’s historic layout, and staff are available to help with directions and information.
Regular Hours: Open daily from April to September, 10am – 6pm. From October to March, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am – 5:15pm.
Closed: Mondays (October to March), January 1, December 25, and during severe weather (when ferries are cancelled).
Last Entry: Final admission is 30 minutes before closing time.
Special Closures: The site may close unexpectedly due to strong winds or rough seas, as ferry service is suspended for safety. Always confirm ferry and château opening status on the morning of your visit.
A small souvenir shop is available on the island, offering Monte Cristo-themed gifts and memorabilia.
A rooftop cafe operates on the terrace, serving local, home-made dishes inspired by Mediterranean produce.
Toilets are available on the island near the café/restaurant and souvenir shop. There are no baby changing or nursing facilities.
The Château d’If is not wheelchair accessible. There are steep stairs, uneven surfaces, and no elevators or ramps throughout the monument.
