Pro tips to help you make a pick

The "Secret" Southern Entrance: Most tourists use the main gate near the Mellah, but entering via Riad Zitoun el Jdid street can sometimes lead to a less-crowded entry experience that places you closer to the Grand Courtyard.

Download your maps offline: The palace is a literal labyrinth designed to confuse intruders; cell reception inside the thick stone walls is notoriously patchy, so have your digital guide or map saved before you enter.

Look up, not just around: While the floor tiles are stunning, the most expensive and intricate artwork is actually on the cedarwood ceilings. Observe the hand-painted floral motifs and carved muqarnas that decorate the upper reaches of the Council Chamber.

Beat the midday "Sun-Trap": The Grand Courtyard is massive and has almost no shade. If you visit between 12pm and 3pm, the heat reflecting off the white marble can be intense; visit at 9am sharp to enjoy the cool morning air.

Dress for the "Marble Walk": While the palace is beautiful, the floors are uneven and the marble can be surprisingly slippery when dusty or wet. Wear shoes with good grip to navigate the transitions between courtyards safely.

About Bahia Palace

Constructed between 1866 and 1900, Bahia Palace served as the lavish residence of Si Moussa and later his son, Ba Ahmed. The 150-room complex is a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture, blending Andalusian and Moorish styles. Its serene courtyards and mosaics make it a cultural gem.

Did you know?

Despite its ancient feel, the palace was only completed in 1900, having been built in two distinct stages by a father-and-son duo of Grand Viziers.

The palace features 160 rooms, but they were all built on a single level because the Grand Vizier Ba Ahmed was reportedly so stout that he found climbing stairs too difficult.

Upon the death of Grand Vizier Ba Ahmed in 1900, the palace was famously looted by the Sultan’s servants, who carried away everything from silk carpets to expensive furniture within hours.

During the French Protectorate, the palace served as the residence of the Resident-General, who added modern amenities like electricity and fireplaces while maintaining the traditional decor.

The palace's expansive courtyards and intricate interiors were used as a filming location for the 1964 epic film Lawrence of Arabia, standing in for various Arab headquarters.

Why visit Bahia Palace?

A masterclass in Moroccan craftsmanship

Admire the stunning blend of Islamic and Andalusian styles through intricate stucco work, zellij tiles, and cedarwood carvings.

Wander through a 19th-century harem

Gain a rare glimpse into the private lives of Morocco's powerful Grand Viziers. The palace was designed to house multiple wives and dozens of concubines, with each room telling a story of power, privacy, and domestic life in the Sultanate era, set within beautifully preserved residential quarters.

Peaceful courtyards and gardens

Experience a sensory oasis amidst the intense heat of the Marrakech medina. The palace is famous for its "Petit Riad" and various courtyards filled with orange trees, jasmine, and fountains, providing a tranquil soundtrack of trickling water and birdsong that offers a peaceful retreat.

Photographer’s paradise of light and shadow

Capture the symmetric beauty of the Grand Courtyard, a vast space paved in Italian Carrara marble. The interplay of the bright Moroccan sun with rhythmic arches and vibrant blue and yellow galleries creates a kaleidoscope of shadows that is a dream for capturing iconic travel photos.

Explore the heart of the Mellah

Ideally situated on the edge of Marrakech's historic Jewish quarter, a visit here allows you to easily combine your tour with nearby sites like the Lazama Synagogue. It serves as a perfect cultural anchor, connecting the grand history of the viziers with the diverse social fabric of old Marrakech.

We had a great first tour of the main sites with our guide Rachid. I really appreciated his clear explanations about the different sites and the Medina. It was really nice not having to wait in line to buy admission tickets to the sites. I wasn’t as keen on the stop at the cosmetics and spice shop (hence the 4-star rating).

Elhoussine was the PERFECT guide. Literally couldn't have asked for a better day. He went above and beyond to get us to as much as possible and really immerse us in the Moroccan culture. He clearly knows his way around Marrakech and is extraordinarily knowledgeable about Morrocco and his hometown of Marrakech. I would rate him 10 stars if I could! We are already planning to bring our children back to explore more with Elhoussine.

A big thank you to Ahmed for his kindness and especially for all the little touches during this tour (suitable pace, advice on getting around safely, etc.). He has a very good knowledge of the history of the place and of history in general, including that of France (sometimes better than us!). Highly recommended without hesitation.
