I love being able to move about discreetly through a tourist sight at my own pace without having to join a group to learn a bit about the rich history of the place. The descriptions were long enough to enrich our travel experience without overwhelming us with too many facts and figures. We both felt that the descriptions were well-balanced and informative, giving enough detail to encourage further exploration in the areas that most interested us. Well done on your service, and thank you for adding a fun twist to city touring and for offering a way to visit a tourist site that is far-less intrusive for the locals as well.

Easy to book, smooth entry, and seamless transition to the actual Castle and Ramparts! The Castle itself is really nice. We opted for the extra audio tour after we arrvied which was worth the 4 euro pp - at least in the Castle section. Feel free to hop off of the Ramparts midway through if needed, especially if you are taking the tour during lunch time. Places in the city fill up fast and are only (usually) open from 12-2pm!

Nos encantó la experiencia. Pasear por las murallas al atardecer fue mágico, y el castillo está muy bien conservado. Es una visita obligatoria si estás en la zona. Comprar las entradas por Headout hizo todo muy fácil.

Getting started

Present you mobile ticket at Carcassonne Castle’s main entrance and breeze past the queues. For the walking tour, use your smartphone and headphones to access the audio guide (downloading it in advance is recommended) and explore at your own pace.

What to expect

This experience combines direct entry to the castle and ramparts with an in-depth walking tour of the city. Use the audio guide to move between 19 narrated stops, from defensive towers to hidden alleys, while uncovering the myths, history, and architecture that define Carcassonne.

What to bring

It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes for the day-long tour.

Carry headphones and ensure your smartphone is charged.

Activate and download the tour in advance as there may be no Wi-Fi and a weak mobile signal at the starting point.

What’s not allowed

Pets are not permitted, except for service animals.

Smoking is prohibited inside the castle.

Scooters, bicycles, helmets, non-folding strollers, and bulky luggage are not permitted inside the Château Comtal or along the ramparts.

Accessibility

This experience may not be fully accessible for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.

Additional information

Entry is free for disabled guests with an accompanying adult, jobseekers (on presentation of a certificate less than 6 months old), and holders of a valid education pass or culture pass.

Carcassonne Castle offers free admission on select days, including the European Heritage Days on 20 & 21 September 2025, and on the first Sunday of January, February, March, November, and December.

To avoid large crowds at the entrance, it is recommended to arrive 1 hour after the monument opens.

The museum will remain closed for safety reasons.
