Experience the heart of the British Monarchy with a flexible ticket that lets you tailor your visit to your specific interests. Whether you are drawn to the architectural grandeur of the palace, the evolution of royal fashion, or the historic tradition of state travel, this ticket grants you access to one of three distinct areas of the Buckingham Palace estate.
Getting started
Upon arrival at the Buckingham Palace visitor entrance, you will present your voucher to redeem your entry for your chosen attraction. Because these sites operate on different seasonal schedules—the State Rooms are open from July 9 to September 27, while The King’s Gallery and Royal Mews are open from April 10 to October 18 and from March 5 to November 1, respectively—it is essential to check the opening dates for your selected date. Each ticket includes a complimentary multimedia guide, available in multiple languages, to provide context as you explore at your own pace.
What to expect
State Rooms
The State Rooms represent the 'working' heart of the palace. These 19 rooms serve as the setting for official ceremonial duties and state entertaining by The King. You can expect a walk through history, surrounded by some of the finest English and French furniture in the world and masterworks from the Royal Collection.
Features:
-
The Throne Room: Perhaps the most recognisable space in the palace, this room is used for court balls and was the backdrop for the official wedding photographs of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
-
The White Drawing Room: A spectacular example of royal opulence, featuring a hidden door disguised as a mirror and cabinet, which allows the Royal Family to enter the State Apartments privately.
-
The Grand Staircase: An architectural masterpiece designed by John Nash, featuring intricate bronze balustrades and portraits of Queen Victoria’s immediate family.
The King’s Gallery
Located on the site of a former chapel, The King’s Gallery is a dedicated art space that hosts a rotating program of exhibitions. Unlike the State Rooms, which focus on decor, the Gallery is where you go to see the treasures of the collection up close, featuring everything from Old Master paintings to rare photographs and sparkling jewellery.
Features:
-
'Her Life in Style' exhibit: The current highlight is a special tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, showcasing her iconic wardrobe. It offers a rare look at the craftsmanship behind the dresses and accessories that defined a 70-year reign.
-
Curated artistic depth: The gallery provides a museum-quality environment with sophisticated lighting and climate control, ensuring the preservation of delicate textiles and historic canvases.
-
Royal gift shop: The gallery houses one of the most extensive official shops, offering exclusive chinaware and literature related to the current exhibition.
Royal Mews
The Royal Mews is one of the finest working stables in existence. Here, you can expect to see the impressive infrastructure required for state travel. It is a unique blend of a living stable, home to the famous Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays, and a museum of royal transport.
Features:
-
The Gold State Coach: Built for George III in 1762, this breathtaking eight-horse-drawn carriage has been used at every coronation since William IV. It is a massive, gilded work of art that must be seen in person to appreciate its scale.
-
Historic liveries and harnesses: Explore the 'Tack Room' to see the intricate leatherwork and the traditional uniforms worn by the King’s coachmen and grooms.
-
The state stables: Visit the stalls where the royal horses are kept. If you are lucky, you may see the horses being exercised or prepared for a ceremonial event.
