Nos encantó visitar Meteora con vuestra compañía. Todo estuvo perfectamente organizado desde el principio hasta el final. Los horarios se cumplieron exactamente como estaban previstos, lo que hizo que el viaje fuera muy cómodo y sin preocupaciones. La relación calidad-precio es excelente, especialmente teniendo en cuenta todo lo que incluye la excursión. El transporte fue cómodo, la información proporcionada fue muy interesante y el equipo fue siempre amable y profesional. Meteora es un lugar impresionante y esta experiencia hizo que la visita fuera aún más especial. Excellent tour , very knowledgeable, you can see their passion for teaching tourists . Spent 4 hours, very interesting . Would recommend to everyone, Meteora is so beautiful, a good place to be for a break with routines of life . So glad we took 2 days and a night Very relaxing.

Nos gustó el tour en general, los guías bastante amables, sobre todo Nicolás un guía muy completo en cuanto a información y amabilidad. No pudimos ver el atardecer por las condiciones climáticas, pero los dos días de tour muy buenos y didácticos, lugares hermosos llenos de historia. El hotel bastante bien, habíamos leído malos comentarios pero en general bien. El único punto negativo que doy es el transporte al regreso, éramos un grupo de 4 y nos asignaron sillas separadas super incómodo para un viaje de 4 horas, había gente sentada sola, eso no lo entendí. En general todo bien, recomiendo este tour.

Your expert guide brings Meteora to life with stories about secret monk traditions, hidden details in the monasteries, and the area’s history through empires and invasions.

On the first day, take a sunset tour through Kalabaka’s Old Town to the 1,000-year-old Byzantine Church of the Virgin Mary, ending at a remote viewpoint where the sun sets behind Meteora’s jagged spires.

On the second day, choose between a sightseeing tour and a hiking tour. The sightseeing tour invites you to explore 2 to 3 monasteries, each with its own unique story, from the towering domes of Varlaam to the fresco-filled halls of Great Meteoron, the oldest and largest of them all.

The hiking tour takes you beyond the usual routes, following ancient monk trails through shaded forests and up to panoramic cliffside plateaus, perfect for stunning views without the crowds.

Did you know? The old kitchen at Great Meteoron Monastery still holds a giant iron cauldron once used to cook for dozens of monks. It was stirred with a wooden paddle that’s taller than the average person, and it’s still on display today.

What to bring

Bring a small amount of cash for monastery fees (€3 to €5 per person) and small purchases.

Wear supportive, closed-toe shoes with a solid grip. Many of the footpaths include steps, stones, and uneven surfaces.

Carry a refillable water bottle and a light snack, particularly in the warmer months, between June and August.

Make sure to bring your own earphones and a fully charged smartphone to listen to the audio guide during your visit.

What's not allowed

Photography is allowed in most outdoor areas, but don't click pictures inside chapels, or of resident monks, or nuns.

Drones are not permitted without prior authorization, due to the area’s protected status and privacy concerns.

Accessibility

Meteora's terrain is not suitable for wheelchairs. Every monastery requires you to climb stairs or walk along sloped paths.

If you have limited mobility, consider visiting St. Stephen’s Monastery. It offers easier access with a paved pathway and fewer stairs than the others.

Additional information

Your tour bus will be waiting directly across from the Larissa station, on Theodore Diligianni Street, in front of Everest Café. Look for the bus with the 'Meteora Thrones-Travel Center' sign on the window.

Depending on the day, you’ll enter 2 to 4 monasteries. Each monastery has one designated closing day per week (Great Meteoron is closed Tuesdays, and Varlaam is closed Fridays), so the tour route may vary.

Most monasteries require a €3 to €5 offering per person, payable in cash at the gate.

Dress modestly. Men must wear long pants; women should cover their shoulders and wear skirts below the knee. Wraps are often provided at entrances.

Transportation between sites is provided via local minibuses or shuttle coaches.

Restrooms are available at the larger monasteries, such as Great Meteoron, Varlaam, and St. Stephen’s. Some may request a small tip for use.

Guides are not allowed inside monasteries. If you'd like to explore further, multi-language audio guides are available to use on your own mobile.
