Once you leave Auckland, your journey will take you down south, through the stunning Waikato countryside. This is the most extensive farming area in the world, and your guide will stop for photo ops. You will also pass through Taupiri, home to several Maori burial grounds & cultural totem poles. At Pirongia, pick up some local history, and learn about the New Zealand Wars. Break for coffee, before continuing onwards to Otorohanga. As the “Kiwiana capital of New Zealand,” this charming town is home to all things Kiwi.
Next up is the Waitomo Caves. Follow your guide through the ancient caves and observe the stalactites, stalagmites, and lime columns. Descend even further underground for your glowworm experience. Step onto a boat for a cruise on the grotto river, with thousands of glowworms sparkling above you. It is an experience that cannot be put into words!
On the way to Rotorua, stop outside Big Bird to meet and take photos with some friendly native animals. Head onwards to Te Puia, where you can enjoy a fully guided tour of the geothermal and cultural wonders. These include the Pōhutu Geyser, Māori architecture, The National Māori Arts School, geothermal craters, and the chance to view a kiwi bird in the kiwi viewing house. To finish off the Rotorua experience, go on a guided driving tour of the most famous sites in Rotorua city. See Lake Rotorua, Rotorua Museum, Government Gardens, Whangapipiro (Rachel Spring) & the Blue Baths. If time permits, you may even visit a special souvenir shop for some discounted shopping and to try manuka honey. End your tour with a fully guided return trip to Auckland (with secret stops along the way!).
