Whether you are an art connoisseur who cannot get enough of paintings and intricate sculptures, a history buff who devours everything Roman, or simply someone who prefers the great outdoors with some peace and quiet, interest in this area was revived in 1832 when Pope Gregory XVI funded an incredible feat of hydraulic engineering to redirect a stream and create the second-highest waterfall in Italy. This waterfall is surrounded by lush green trails that will take you to the most iconic sites of the complex - including the exquisite painting collections curated by the pope himself and the ancient Roman acropolis. Get a taste of ancient Roman luxury at the houses of Horace and Manlius Vopiscus before heading to the temple of Vesta - the Roman goddess of the home and hearth.
