Excellent performance of a classic opera staged in an iconic venue. Perfomed in Italian but with subtitles which made the experience more meaningful. All the performers were excellent especially Madame Butterfly. Thouroughly enjoyed the performance over the two and the half hours. Highly recommended for opera lovers.

My husband and I have never been to an opera before, so we were both brimming with excitement, despite the odd feeling of first night nerves! The singing and performances were amazing as was the set design, with its platforms and water ponds surrounding the stage. The little fellow who played Butterfly's child was outstanding for one so young. We really appreciated the story description in the booklet and the dialogue screens, which helped us gain a better undersanding of the storyline. The orchestra. too, was excellent (we both envied the conductor's energy!). As for the atmosphere, it felt vibrant in a subdued, elegant, almost Japanesy way. A woman in our row was even wearing a kimono! Overall, we felt primed for something great and that's exactly what we got. Our congratulations to the cast and all involved in this sublime presentation.

Absolutely loved loved loved the show. Surprised you allowed a LATE comer in after the doors had closed and the performance had started. There has to be consequences for tardiness at the opera. VERY surprised with the lack of sanitation protocols in the Opera House. Just come off the Queen Mary 2 where the protocols were in effect all the time. Stewards asking you to disinfect your hands as you enter the dining halls and theatres. Your washrooms has ZERO signage about washing up after using the facilities or about opening the door using the towel used to dry your hands with and the bin located next to the door. Looking at the average age of your clients catching a cold or Covid or the flu is definitely not on their top five things they want when visiting the Opera House Martin Hare 519-716-9603 Canada 🇨🇦 Elbows Up

Madama Butterfly in the Sydney Opera house was the first time I went to an opera. I am so impressed by the performance and the venue. I sat upstairs but the view was still amazing. The staff working there were very nice and helpful. I felt very welcome. They had free water to stay hydrated in the break and you get a program with all the Information about the opera. The Performance itself was very passionate but also funny in some places, as well as tragic. It was easy to follow the storyline and everyone in the orchestra, the singers and people working behind the scenes did an amazing job. Would definitely recommend it, even if you're not that into Operas.

It was our third visit to Sydney (as the saying goes, the "charm") and we finally achieved our 15 year dream of visiting the Opera House for a performance. Madame Butterfly featured stunning vocals and imagery. For all its exterior beauty, the interior design is quite a disappointment, offering few (and difficult to find) restrooms. There are lots of stairs to climb , especially to our "nosebleed" seats in row "N." We didn't notice it on the way up, but exiting the house gets complicated by staircases and hallways that narrow into bottlenecks on the way down and out. Nevertheless we consider it to be a priceless experience.

I travelled from the UK specifically to see Madam Bufferfly at Sydney Opera Houseand it did not disappoint, it was an honour to be there. Everything was perfect. I enjoyed the sound acoustics, backstage lighting and sets. The quality of singing was magnificent. The orchestra played beautifully and in harmony together. I appreciated the prompts around the theatre which helped me to follow a wonderful romance with a tragic ending. I highly recommend. Thank you to the Opera House and cast for such warm memories of Sydney to take home with me.

    • Globally acclaimed sopranos Guanqun Yu, Vittoria Yeo, and Olivia Cranwell lead this production, supported by celebrated conductors Andrea Battistoni, Erina Yashima, and Paul Fitzsimon.

    • Moffatt Oxenbould’s staging returns with sliding paper panels, floating candles, and a real moat, creating an arresting backdrop which is "beautiful and moving" (Sydney Morning Herald).

    • Themes of hope, desire, and sacrifice unfold through the soaring score, from Un bel dì vedremo to the Humming Chorus, which brings emotional depth to Madama Butterfly.

    • Playing at the Joan Sutherland Theater, this season brings a fresh interpretation to Puccini’s score. Book tickets to the Madama Butterfly opera in Sydney now!

    The story

Set in early 20th-century Nagasaki, Madama Butterfly follows Cio-Cio-San, a young Japanese woman who enters a fragile marriage with U.S. naval officer Pinkerton. Believing deeply in love and reinvention, she builds a future around his promised return, even as family, tradition, and shifting loyalties close in. Themes of devotion, cultural divide, and hope drive the drama forward. As ships gather in the harbour once more, her faith faces a shattering test, and everything hangs on what she chooses next.

Just being in this beautiful opera house is a treat in itself, but this performance was simply one of a kind! The highlight for me was the cherry blossoms falling all over the stage and the appearance of a toddler in the evening program—everything felt so authentic
