It is a unique show. First of all, because it was enjoyed at the Sydney Opera House and, in particular, because of the quality of the work, the incredible staging, and the performance of the singers and the Sydney Opera House orchestra. Everything was perfect. I am not a fan, but I have gone on several occasions to enjoy opera performances, and in this case, I was impressed.

We thoroughly enjoyed the musical performance, the stage design and the dramaturgy. However, the air conditioning was terrible: it was freezing cold throughout the entire event. We can only hope that it was just our seats (Q30 & Q 31) that were affected by this Siberian cold and not the performers.

    • Themes of hope, desire, and sacrifice unfold through the soaring score, from Un bel dì vedremo to the Humming Chorus, which brings emotional depth to Madama Butterfly.

    The story

Set in early 20th-century Nagasaki, Madama Butterfly follows Cio-Cio-San, a young Japanese woman who enters a fragile marriage with U.S. naval officer Pinkerton. Believing deeply in love and reinvention, she builds a future around his promised return, even as family, tradition, and shifting loyalties close in. Themes of devotion, cultural divide, and hope drive the drama forward. As ships gather in the harbour once more, her faith faces a shattering test, and everything hangs on what she chooses next.

Opera Australia’s current season of Madama Butterfly is a triumph of visual beauty and musical depth. The revival’s rich scenic world—brought to life through Russell Cohen’s evocative set design and Peter England’s exquisite costumes create a breathtaking, culturally resonant atmosphere, perfectly framing Puccini’s tragedy. The 16 January performance featured the outstanding Australian debut of soprano Guanqun Yu, whose radiant tone and deeply empathetic characterisation captivated the audience, prompting an extended standing ovation. Under the assured musical direction of conductor Battistoni, the OA Orchestra delivered a lush, expressive performance alert to every nuance of Puccini’s score and elevating the drama with remarkable sensitivity. This Madama Butterfly is both visually stunning and emotionally profound, an unmissable highlight of the season.
