About Pyramid of Giza
The Pyramids of Giza, comprising the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, are one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. These monumental structures were built during the Old Kingdom period in ancient Egypt to bury their Pharaohs. The inside of these pyramids are lined with intricate passageways and hieroglyphics to guide the Pharaoh’s soul into the afterlife. In the present day, the pyramids continue to draw visitors from around the world to marvel at their architectural ingenuity and timeless grandeur.
Alignment with the stars: One of the most intriguing aspects of the Pyramids of Giza is their alignment with celestial bodies. The sides of the Great Pyramid are aligned with the cardinal points of the compass. It is also believed that the Pyramid of Khufu functioned as an astronomical observatory, with certain passages and chambers aligning with specific stars and constellations.
Architectural precision: Despite being constructed around 4500 years ago, the Pyramids of Giza were built with such accuracy that there are near to no gaps between the stones. Visitors and researchers continue to be awed at how the ancient Egyptian craftsmen built these towering structures with the simplest tools.
Built by excellent craftsmen: Despite popular misconceptions, researchers have confirmed that the Pyramids were not entirely built by slaves, but several skilled architects and government officials were involved in their construction. These workers were compensated for their efforts. The exact techniques employed to transport the stones up the structure remain a mystery among archaeologists.
Symbolism and purpose: The Pyramids of Giza served as royal tombs for the Pharaohs of the Fourth Dynasty. The elaborate burial chambers within the pyramids were filled with treasures and artifacts meant to accompany the Pharaohs in the afterlife. The Great Pyramids are also surrounded by the tombs of nobles and officials, reflecting the hierarchical structure of ancient Egyptian society.
Ongoing research: Despite having been extensively picked apart and studied for decades, the Pyramids of Giza continue to reveal new insights and discoveries. The archaeologists are still discovering inner burial chambers, and hidden passageways, and re-interpreting the hieroglyphics on the walls to better understand the hymns and spells used to guide the Pharaohs into the afterlife.
