Why You Should Watch George Balanchine
Why You Should Watch George Balanchine
This production consists of three exquisitely choreographed ballets by Balanchine. Set to Bach’s Concerto in D minor for Two Violins, Concerto Barocco is a careful exploration of how classical dancing evolved closely with classical music. The two ballerinas in the first movement embody the two lead violins. This piece is accompanied by Balanchine’s unique take on The Four Temperaments backed by a composition of Paul Hindersmith. This ballet employs a counterplay between consonance and dissonance in music as an analog to the moods of the human mind: sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric, and melancholic. Balanchine’s ballet adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s moving Serenade is also presented as a part of this tribute.
Balanchine drew much of his inspiration from composers such as Tchaikovsky, Fokine, and Bach. This tribute to the master choreographer presents some of the best ballets from his ‘first American period’. Characterized by top-notch music and flawless dancing, this show offers one of the most stunning revivals of Balanchine’s classics.
