Our guide Per was the most incredible, friendly, and funny guide we could ask for. He constantly cracked jokes with us and made us feel so welcomed on his ship. He provided hot drinks, yummy snacks, and a delicious home cooked fish soup for dinner. He knew everything about the northern lights and even steered our ship in the opposite direction just so we could catch a glimpse. He was also extremely knowledgeable about the town and gave us great recommendations for bars and restaurants. 10/10 would recommend, would not want any other guide!!

A wonderful experience. I didn't think sledding with reindeer would be so much fun, especially under a sky lit up by the Northern Lights. Feeding them was also exciting. The part that fascinated me most was learning about the Sami culture, which I didn't know much about. Truly beautiful and magical.

Main stops on your Tromso Northern Lights tours

Remote Arctic fjords & valleys

Leave Tromsø’s city lights behind and head into remote fjords, islands, and inland valleys where the sky is truly dark. These wild viewpoints are chosen nightly based on weather and aurora forecasts, giving you wide horizons, snow-covered landscapes, and some of the clearest conditions for spotting the Northern Lights. Recommended duration: 2–4 hours Included: Yes, all tours

Snowy campfire stop

On many chases, your guide sets up a campfire in the snow so you can warm up between sky checks. You’ll sip hot chocolate or coffee, grill sausages or marshmallows, and share stories with the group, turning waiting time for the aurora into one of the night’s cosiest memories. Recommended duration: 45–90 minutes Included: Yes, some tours

Northern Lights fjord cruise

Sail silently out of Tromsø harbor on an electric or hybrid boat and watch the city lights fade behind you. From the heated lounge or open deck, you’ll scan the sky for auroras arching above dark mountains and mirrored in the fjord, with guides on hand to share stories and tips. Recommended duration: 3–4 hours Included: Yes, some tours

Aurora husky camp

Visit a remote husky farm outside Tromsø, where playful Alaskan huskies and puppies welcome you before nightfall. After a hearty Norwegian dinner, you’ll step outside or into a traditional hut by the bonfire to watch for the Northern Lights, far from city glare and surrounded by silent snowy hills. Recommended duration: 3–4 hours Included: Yes, some tours

Sámi reindeer camp & lavvu

At a Sámi reindeer camp, you’ll glide through the snow on a gentle sled ride, hand-feed the reindeer, then gather inside a warm lavvu tent. Over a traditional meal and stories about Sámi culture and the aurora, you’ll step outside regularly to check the sky for Northern Lights above the corrals. Recommended duration: 3–4 hours Included: Yes, some tours

Aurora photography session

Many tours include help setting up your camera and a mini photo shoot under the Northern Lights. Guides provide tripods, adjust your settings, and capture long‑exposure portraits so even first‑time photographers can go home with vivid images. Recommended duration: 1–2 hours Included: Yes, some tours

Afternoon
As twilight settles, meet your guide in central Tromsø and board your coach or electric boat. Hear stories about the aurora while you leave city lights behind, then stop at your first dark-sky viewpoint for hot drinks and a simple Norwegian snack.

Evening
Spend the evening watching for shimmering aurora above fjords, mountains, or a cozy aurora camp, with time for photos and warming by the fire. When the show winds down, relax on the heated bus or boat as you’re driven safely back to your Tromsø hotel.

Best time to visit Tromsø for Northern Lights

Weather & Climate:

Aurora season runs late September to early April. Deep winter (December–January) brings extreme cold, long nights and frequent snow; November can be cloudier. Shoulder months September–October and February–March are milder with long, dark evenings. May–July have no darkness.

Events & Seasonal Highlights:

January hosts the Tromsø International Film Festival and Northern Lights Festival, adding concerts and screenings to aurora nights. February brings Sámi Week and reindeer races. In December, Christmas markets and New Year fireworks create a festive backdrop to tours.

Crowd Dynamics & Peak Windows:

Aurora tourism peaks December–February, especially around Christmas, New Year and winter school holidays; tours often sell out. Savvier visitors target September–October and March for good activity, better availability and lower prices. Late August and early April are quiet but short-night.

How to get from Tromsø to the Northern Lights

The easiest and most reliable way to reach dark-sky areas from Tromsø is with pre-arranged round-trip transfers on a guided Northern Lights tour. You’re picked up in the city (often from your hotel or a central meeting point) and driven by coach or minibus to the best available skies, while guides handle weather, road conditions, and forecasts. Thermal suits, hot drinks, and photo help are often included, making this the recommended, stress-free option.

  • Best for: Most visitors, first-timers, families, and anyone uneasy about winter driving
  • Time taken: ~5–8 hours round trip (evening to after midnight)
  • Approx price: Included in tour price (~$110–$200 per person)

Helpful Tips for a Tromsø Northern Lights Tour

  • Plan at least two Tromsø aurora nights: Combining a mobile minibus chase with a comfy camp or cruise boosts your chances of a good display.
  • Pack as if no suit is provided: Big-bus tours around Tromsø rarely include overalls, and even with them you’ll want wool layers and winter boots.
  • Protect your next day’s plans: Avoid scheduling early-morning flights or whale safaris after your Tromsø Northern Lights chase, as buses often return between 1am and 3am.
  • Carry your passport just in case: Tromsø aurora chases sometimes cross the Finnish border in search of clearer skies, even at night.
  • Choose cruises if you hate long drives: If you get carsick on winding Arctic roads, pick a Tromsø Northern Lights fjord cruise, trading inland flexibility for steady sailing and warm indoor lounges.
  • Prep camera gear for Arctic cold: Charge all camera batteries, keep spares in an inner pocket, and bring a small tripod if your Tromsø tour doesn’t provide one for night shots.
  • Eat properly before departure: Eat an early dinner in downtown Tromsø, since most Northern Lights chases only offer hot drinks and cookies, making your water bottle and snacks essential.
  • Prioritize toilets and warmth if needed: If toilets and warm shelters matter to you, favor Tromsø aurora camps or big coaches over minibus chases that rely on roadside or forest stops.
  • Respect dark-sky etiquette for better photos: Follow your guide’s light etiquette: keep phone screens dim, avoid using flash or headlamps, and share tripod spots so everyone’s Tromsø aurora photos stay crisp.
  • Align expectations about aurora colors: Set expectations with your group that Tromsø’s Northern Lights can look like pale grey clouds to the naked eye, with cameras revealing the vivid greens.

Frequently asked questions about Tromsø Northern Lights tours

  • Most Northern Lights tours from Tromsø run 5–8 hours. Road “chase” tours often return between 1:00 and 3:00 AM, especially if they drive far to find clear skies. Cruises and aurora camps are usually a bit shorter, around 3–6 hours. Always check the stated end time before booking.

  • Standard inclusions are round-trip transport from Tromsø, an English-speaking guide, hot drinks, and time at one or more dark-sky locations. Many small-group tours add thermal overalls, snacks, and photography help or portraits; big buses and cruises focus more on transport and commentary. Exact inclusions vary, so read each tour description carefully.

  • You can choose large coach tours, small-group minibus “chases,” aurora camps reached by bus, and fjord cruises by electric or hybrid boats. All depart from Tromsø and include return transport. Coaches and boats offer more onboard comfort; minibuses usually offer more flexibility to move quickly to clearer skies.

  • Yes, especially from late November to February. Small-group, photo-focused, and camp tours often sell out days or weeks ahead, particularly around Christmas and New Year. Larger bus tours and some cruises can be booked last minute, but you’ll have fewer choices. Booking early also helps you spread tours across several nights.

  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Some higher-end or small-group tours offer a discounted or free “second-chance” tour if no aurora appears, subject to availability. Budget tours usually don’t. You’ll still enjoy the Arctic night, stars, and scenery, but always check the specific “no-lights” policy before you book.

  • The main season is late September to late March, when nights are dark. Deep winter (December–February) has the longest nights and highest demand, but can be very cold and cloudy. September, October, and March offer more daylight and milder temperatures, with good aurora chances on clear nights.

  • Many tours welcome children, but long, late, and very cold nights can be tough. Families usually find aurora camps or shorter cruises easier than 7–9 hour road chases. Check minimum ages, whether child-size thermal suits are provided, and consider booking fewer nights but choosing more comfortable formats.

  • Accessibility varies widely. Roadside chases often involve stepping up into a bus and walking on icy, uneven snow in the dark, which can be challenging. Aurora camps and some larger boats are usually more suitable, with structured paths and indoor areas. Always confirm step-free access and toilet details with the operator before booking.

  • Expect sub-zero temperatures and wind, especially when standing still for long periods. Wear thermal base layers, a warm mid-layer, insulated jacket, snow boots, thick socks, mittens, and a hat or balaclava. Many tours provide thermal overalls as an outer layer, but these don’t replace proper clothing underneath.

  • Yes, many visitors do. The airport is close to the city, so arriving by mid-afternoon usually leaves enough time for an evening departure. Just allow a buffer in case of flight delays, and consider jet lag—after a long-haul trip, you may prefer to rest the first night and tour on subsequent evenings.

  • It’s possible to see aurora from Tromsø city or by renting a car, but light pollution and winter driving conditions reduce your chances. Guided tours use local expertise, forecasts, and safe vehicles to reach darker, clearer areas. If it’s your first Arctic winter trip, a tour generally offers much better odds and less hassle.

  • Some small-group chases and premium tours include hotel pickup and drop-off in central Tromsø. Others use set meeting points near major hotels or the tourist office, and cruises depart from the harbor. Details differ by product, so check whether pickup is included or if you’ll need to walk or taxi to the meeting point.

  • Many tours offer basic help with phone or camera settings; some small-group and photography tours include professional aurora portraits or send you edited images afterward. Others sell photos separately or don’t provide them. Bringing a camera isn’t required, but if photos are important, choose a tour that clearly lists photography inclusions.

  • Most operators allow free cancellation up to 24–48 hours before departure; inside that window, refunds are often limited. Always check the cancellation and change policy at checkout, especially in peak season when tours fill quickly.
