Madrid cut the Gran Vía through its old streets from 1910, in three stretches, the later two wider than the first. Its buildings climbed with it, from a French insurer's dome to the city's first skyscraper to the two towers that close the street.
Start with the Metrópolis dome seen whole down Calle de Alcalá, then the Círculo de Bellas Artes, rejected for its height and built anyway. Step into a quiet street behind a church whose back the avenue cut away, and look up at the Telefónica tower beside a granite copy of a Metro pavilion, cut from the original quarries. Walk down past a department store on the Paris model, Callao's curved Carrión building and its neon sign, a block with a theater hidden inside, and the Coliseum. Finish in the Plaza de España with Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.
Eleven stops, about 1.8 km and 60 minutes, step-free and mostly downhill, at your own pace, in English. Rooftop terraces are not included.

What to bring

Footwear: Wear comfortable walking shoes for the 1.8 km route along Gran Vía.

Step-free route: The walk is step-free on wide pavements with a 20 m climb, then a 50 m descent toward Plaza de España.

Tour access: The tour opens in your phone browser and does not require any app download.

Best time to walk: Weekday mornings are calmest; evenings are lively and pavements are crowded, especially on weekends.

Start transport: Reach the start near Banco de España or Sevilla Metro stations, or Madrid-Sol suburban train station.

Finish transport: End or leave via Gran Vía, Callao, Santo Domingo, or Plaza de España Metro stations.

Círculo rooftop hours: Sunday to Thursday 10am to 1.30am, Friday and Saturday 10am to 2am. Tickets at reception.

Oratory hours: Oratorio del Caballero de Gracia: Free entry, every day 10am to 1.45pm and 5pm to 8.45pm.

Telefónica space: Espacio Fundación Telefónica: Free exhibitions, Tuesday to Friday 10am to 8pm, Saturday, Sunday and holidays 11am to 8pm.

Teatro Coliseum: Box office Monday to Thursday 12pm to 8.30pm, Friday and Saturday 12pm to 10pm, Sunday 12pm to 6pm.

Edificio España rooftop: The Edificio España rooftop bar is ticketed, so you should check the hotel site for details.

Crowds and safety: Gran Vía pavements are crowded; watch for pickpockets, keep bags closed, and avoid phones in back pockets.

Street crossing: You should cross only at designated crossings and follow traffic signals for safety.

Seasonal note: In winter, Plaza de España hosts a Christmas market and an ice rink on the square.

Playground at stop 11: At stop 11 beside the playground, you should stay on the path throughout your visit.
