why watch bran nue dae
The classic Aboriginal coming-of-age musical from Jimmy Chi, Bran Nue Dae follows the story of Young Willie, a runaway from mission school who has to journey through the Australian Outback back to his home in Broome, where he must win back the heart of the girl he left behind. His journey through the surreal 1960's Western Australia is broken up by meetings with strange characters and stranger situations. The stage is a recreation of the historic Sun Pictures open-air cinema in Broome, and the costumes are nostalgic and call back an era that has long passed.
The music in the show, a feel-good mash-up of rock-and-roll, gospel, country, and blues music made this first-ever Aboriginal musical a sparkling success in 1990. Now, you can hum along to your favorite hits from the show live!
A dramatic and epic tale told with much humor and hope, this musical is a story for all Australians. As Jimmy Chi once said, “It is my story but it is also yours and everybody else you know who seeks love and happiness in a world clouded by injustice.”
