This place, which I actually had never heard of before visiting Portugal, was an absolute pleasure and a "must see" for anyone visiting Lisbon. Just the trip up the hillside to the castle entrance, including a quick swing through the city of Sintra, was just beautiful. And the castle itself was breath taking. In addition, the logistics were easy to do. Our on-line ticket purchase the day before allowed us an early entry before the site became too crowded. We opted to walk up the hill (there is a shuttle for those who can' or don't wish to make the climb) and found the walk through the surrounding park to be wonderful. Arriving at the castle entry was easy and a self-guided tour allowed us to enjoy whatever aspects of the castle we wanted to see. Something we'd not seen before. Visitors can scan a QR code at the entrance (bring your mobile phone!) and download descriptions of each room, without having to fuss with the headsets and players typically in use. This made the excursion that more enjoyable. As mentioined, if you're in Lisbon, don't miss the chance to visit. It's important to do this with a tour bus or a private (tourguide) car. Parking in the area is nearly non-existent, and it's best to have someone else worry about transportation for you.

One of the highlights of my whole trip was the visit to Pena Palace. High up in the mountains, it really is a fairytale palace! I think the only downside is the communication conveyed. We are told to be there in ample time, we are told we can get a public transit bus from the station and they run every 10-15 minutes. What they don't tell you is that the public transit bus is not really that "public" as in they don't accept navegante cards nor do they sell single or return tickets and you must buy a whole day hop on hop off ticket. They also don't tell you that from the station it takes 40 minutes to get to the Park entrance. I nearly missed my timeslot despite giving it plenty of time. It would help others if these numbers are actually given with the directions. I thoroughly enjoyed my day though and think the bus was worth the €10.95.

We had such a lovely experience at Pema Palace and Park in Sintra. The place has a peaceful, welcoming atmosphere, and the beautiful surroundings make it feel like a little escape from the busier parts of Sintra. What really stood out was the warmth and hospitality. Everything felt relaxed and genuine, and we enjoyed simply taking our time and soaking in the surroundings. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, breathe, and enjoy the moment. A wonderful spot to visit if you’re in Sintra — highly recommended!

From booking tickets, to receiving them, to arrival at the Palace, everything was easy and exactly as described. The directions and explanation of the walk from the entrance up to the palace was just as expected.... The Palace itself is beyond what the pictures show... stunning views and history! I would recommend this stop. From Lisbon it was an easy train ride. We then purchased return bus ride to the entrance - which is unlimited stops for the day and a hop on hop off for the area. Well Worth it.

Uma experiência imperdível em Sintra! O Palácio da Pena é ainda mais impressionante pessoalmente, a arquitetura, mobilia preservada e cores são incríveis e a vista da região é linda. Recomendo comprar o ingresso com antecedência e chegar cedo, pois o local fica bastante movimentado ao longo do dia. Deixamos o carro no estacionamento Lourel e pegamos o ônibus 434 que sai no local, super fácil, recomendo. Sem dúvida um passeio para incluir no roteiro!

I was really looking forward to seeing Pena Palace. When our excursion was canceled twice -- first by the cruise line and then by Viator, I was deflated. A wonderful taxi driver Paulo and Alex Headout came to the rescue. Both were wonderful! Many kudos for everything. Pena Palace is an historic gem. We had never seen such an unusual and colorful palace. The art treasures packed in several of the rooms were magnificent. Highly recommend.

Die Buchung über headout hat super geklappt und die App ist einfach aufgebaut und man bekommt oft Prozente je öfter man darüber bucht, also haben wir unsere ganzen Unternehmungen in Portugal darüber gebucht. Zum Pena Palast: Der Palast innen hat uns jetzt persönlich nicht so umgehauen, aber dafür der riesige Park dazu. Da gibt es total viel zu entdecken und man kann viele Stunden dort verbringen.

Pałac Pena dużo ciekawszy od Quinta da Regalaira. Uwaga na transport w Sintrze! Ci którzy chcą dojścia do atrakcji zrealizować piechotą muszą zarezerwować cały dzień - dużo stromych podejść, stosunkowo duże odległości. Poza tym jest kilka innych opcji. Oczywiście ja trafiłem na najdroższą i okazało się najgorszą. Lepiej sprawdzić opcje przed przyjazdem do Sintry.

Antonio was a wonderful guide. Excellent English. Patient with our slower speed. Adjusted the tour to the traffic and people to make it the smoothest experience for us. His lunch recommendation was fabulous. Eating lunch right on the beach next to a famous Portuguese couple (we were totally unaware). The food was fabulous too.

It is a special place, a combination of history, culture and nature. For who likes the nature the trails going up are really a delight!. For who likes history/culture, it is a drop in the ocean. It is a pitty that is so crowded, but ... everybody want to see beautiful things! Explanations were clear beforehand!

We begonnen de dag in Lissabon daar van daan met de trein naar Sintra. Pena palace kwamen we snel in omdat we al kaarten hadden gekocht. Een prachtig kasteel. Mooie uitzicht punten. En je kan een prachtige wandeling maken door het bos naar een kruis berg op maar de moeite waard! Ik zou dit zeker aanbevelen.

Getting started

Head to the main entrance of Pena Park. Depending on your ticket type, show your digital or printed voucher for access. If you’ve booked the transport upgrade, take the shuttle from the park entrance up to the palace. Security checks are standard, so keep your ticket ready and allow time for queues.

What to expect

What to bring

Please wear comfortable walking shoes as you'll have to do a considerable amount of walking.

Make sure to bring refillable water bottles to refuel.

Remember to bring a valid ID for ticket verification.

What's not allowed

Your furry friends are unfortunately not allowed (except guide dogs).

Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the palace.

Avoid bringing large bags or luggage.

Shutter bugs take note, tripods and drones are prohibited here.

Accessibility

Guide dogs are permitted.

Wheelchair access is available in certain areas; however, some parts of the Palace and park may be challenging due to uneven terrain and stairs.

The audio guide is available on the app. Instructions to download will be shared with your ticket—bring your own headphones and a fully charged phone.

Portugal residents can enjoy free access to parks and monuments on Sundays and public holidays

The attraction may be crowded, so expect some waiting time, especially at the security checkpoint (15–20 minutes).

Your selected time slot is for entry to Pena Palace. Since it’s about a 30-minute walk from the park entrance to the palace, make sure to arrive early. Late arrivals may be denied entry.

Please use the house tour entrance instead of the main gate.

Private vehicles are not permitted, so visitors should use pedestrian trails or public transport.

About 30 km from Lisbon, Pena Palace sits in Sintra, where parking is available in the historic center or outer lots, though spaces can be limited.

The shuttle service covers round-trip transfers between the park entrance and Pena Palace.
