The history of the monastery (and its unexpected connection to pastel de nata) helped my time in Lisbon have layered meaning. Our guide (Dee) was wonderful, incredibly knowledgeable, really great with the young kids in our group, and even took our pictures if we wanted!! I would recommend the full walking tour and pastry option if you have the time.

Jerónimos monastery was absolutely stunning and I think a priority to see while in Lisbon. It is one of the only buildings to survive the devastating 1755 earthquake in Lisbon. The skip the line was totally worth it (I could only go on a holiday Saturday and we got in very quickly). My tour guide, Joao, was excellent and was very knowledgeable about the Monastery and surrounding area. I also thought the visit to Pastéis de Belém (without any wait) was totally worth it to taste the historic pastery. I really enjoyed the entire tour!

Nous avons observé l'affluence pour les visites et le créneau choisi, (11h30-12h00) a permis de passer sans attente. Malgré les travaux à l'extérieur, l'intérieur du monastère et de l'église sont toujours impressionnants. Venus pour la seconde fois, nous sommes toujours attirés par ce monument de Lisbonne et sa quiétude. L'ibtention des billets préalablement sur le site est un réel plus.

No mosteiro estava com a minha mãe, que usa cadeira de rodas. Nos sentimos especiais! Deram todo apoio, atenção, nunca passamos por um tratamento tão cuidadoso assim. E claro, o mosteiro é lindo! Vale a pena a visita!

Had a great day in Lisbon first visiting the Sao Jorge Castle and then making our way by tram to the Monastary. Easy with the pre-purchased tickets not to have to queue to buy tickets!

What's not allowed

Strict dress code: Off-shoulder tops, dresses, and knee-high shorts are not recommended.

Visitors are not allowed to photograph some parts of the monastery.

Keep in mind that food, beverages, large bags, or backpacks are not allowed on this experience.

Accessibility

The lower level is wheelchair accessible, but some areas have cobblestones and can be tricky to navigate.

Wheelchairs are available for rent at the entrance.

The church is a part of Jerónimos Monastery and offers free entry, but you must join a separate line to enter.

The monastery is a crowd-puller, and wait times can stretch to 2 hours during peak hours. Plan smart: arrive early and book tickets online in advance.

To avoid the rush hour madness, we recommend the guided tour with 9:30am priority access.

Entry is free for Portugal residents on Sundays and public holidays, which often leads to larger crowds. If possible, plan your visit on another day.

The Jerónimos Monastery remains closed on Monday, January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, and December 25.
