Had a great day in Lisbon first visiting the Sao Jorge Castle and then making our way by tram to the Monastary. Easy with the pre-purchased tickets not to have to queue to buy tickets!

La llegada fue en autobús, muy simple con la entrada en la mano no tuvimos que hacer las grandes colas que habian, y pudimos disfrutar de un paseo hermoso.

We really enjoyed the castle but unfortunately it was cut short as we accidentally walked out the exit gate and quickly realised we walked out as we walked back in a man who worked there told us we couldn't go back in I offered to show me tickets incase he thought we where trying to sneak in but he seen us walk out and quickly turn back around and he would not let us back in we were very disappointed as we still wanted to look around and sit down and eat some food and have a drink

What to expect

Jerónimos Monastery

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jerónimos Monastery stands as a masterpiece of Manueline architecture and a symbol of Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Built in the early 16th century, it’s renowned for its ornate cloisters and historical significance.

Cloisters: Walk through intricately carved cloisters, celebrated for their detailed stonework and maritime motifs reflecting Portugal’s seafaring legacy.

Church of Santa Maria: Step inside the church, the resting place of explorer Vasco da Gama, and admire its soaring columns and ribbed vaults.

Chapter House: Visit the Chapter House, where important decisions were made, and see its impressive vaulted ceiling.

São Jorge Castle

Perched atop Lisbon’s highest hill, São Jorge Castle dates back to the 11th century and offers sweeping views over the city. This historic fortress played a key role in defending Lisbon through centuries.

Lisbon Cathedral

Main chapels and naves: Wander freely through the chapels, naves, and ambulatory, each echoing centuries of religious tradition.

Upper choir and Treasury museum: Climb to the upper choir for rare views of stained-glass windows, and visit the Treasury Museum to see sacred vestments and religious relics.

Jerónimos Monastery

Strict dress code: Off-shoulder tops, dresses, and knee-high shorts are not recommended.

Large bags and backpacks aren’t permitted at Jerónimos Monastery.

Keep in mind food, beverages, large bags or backpacks are not allowed on this experience.

São Jorge Castle

Food and drinks are restricted in several areas, especially inside the Castle.

Pets are not allowed inside the Castle, except guide dogs with certification.

Accessibility

Jerónimos Monastery

The lower level is wheelchair accessible, but some areas have cobblestones.

Wheelchairs are available for rent at the entrance.

São Jorge Castle

St. George Castle has steep climbs and uneven paths, not ideal for mobility challenges.

Lisbon Cathedral

Lisbon Cathedral is not wheelchair accessible; stairs are required to reach key areas.

Jerónimos Monastery

The church is a part of Jerónimos Monastery and offers free entry, but you must join a separate line to enter.

The monastery is a crowd-puller, and wait times can stretch to 2 hours during peak hours. Plan smart: arrive early and book tickets online in advance.

Entry is free for Portugal residents on Sundays and public holidays, which often leads to larger crowds. If possible, plan your visit on another day.

The Jerónimos Monastery remains closed on Monday, 1st January, Easter Sunday, 1st May, and 25th December.
